[Eril-l] Open Position University of Pittsburgh - Electronic Resource Specialist

Hamill, Cheryl Cheryl.Hamill at health.wa.gov.au
Tue Oct 12 17:55:41 PDT 2021

I was pleased to see responses to the very low salary on offer for this position. I'm in the West Australia public health system and our seniors do this sort of work. Our salaries are $105,824 - $112,443 AUD. That is around USD $77,640 - $82,500. I was also amazed at the very low salary on offer given the qualifications and experience required. It is indeed a poverty wage.

I notice that the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries has salary guides for Library Directors.

It would be great if there were more such guides that mapped salaries to competencies such as - https://nasig.org/Competencies-Eresources<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https*3A*2F*2Fnasig.org*2FCompetencies-Eresources&data=04*7C01*7CLaurel.Crawford*40unt.edu*7C726dd5e0b0e443fae0a508d98d748541*7C70de199207c6480fa318a1afcba03983*7C0*7C0*7C637696355364810570*7CUnknown*7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0*3D*7C2000&sdata=sBptZgGvRSojkUjhczjzBLoPQexCpM8JJhBz0OwI1wM*3D&reserved=0__;JSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSU!!Lav448XFWxY!p4FbR3xhEU02Pd7LpXOKmuCrqCTU14LGhuo224mQHkwISNKwIsUH-goT6qyAF85WmhqYD62a$>

I don't know a solution to suggest but I've found being active in our union has been a huge benefit - not just for me but in advocating for our broader group. I'm president of the committee of management for the Health Services Union of Western Australia. Being active has certainly helped in getting support behind health librarians in this state. In fact a win we had flowed through to all public sector government employed librarians. We have recognition as a group of employees called 'specified callings' - this has an industrial relations meaning that recognises the requirement for university qualifications in order to take up certain positions such as librarians, physiotherapists, social workers etc etc.

In the Health sector in our state we are employed under this agreement
https://ww2.health.wa.gov.au/~/media/Corp/Documents/Health-for/Industrial-relations/Awards-and-agreements/Salaried-officers/WA-Health-System-HSUWA-PACTS-industrial-agreement-2020.pdf
In the public sector more broadly, they are employed under a public sector agreement

I'm not familiar with university library jobs and the scales that apply there but the rates I've seen are certainly much higher than many US jobs I've seen mentioned on lists - eg https://au.indeed.com/Academic-Library-jobs https://staff.uq.edu.au/information-and-services/human-resources/pay-leave-entitlements/pay-scales/professional-research

Nothing changes unless people take action to force change. I don't know if there is an equivalent in the US but in Australia the National Tertiary Education Union is the body that protects workers including librarians.
https://www.nteu.org.au/ I know there is not a strong union tradition in the US. To me this is not a radical idea, simply a way to rectify the power imbalance implicit in an employment relationship. It is not necessarily an adversarial relationship (though it can be where warranted). Respect for employees requires we are paid a fair living wage that reflects the skills and responsibilities we are expected to bring to a job. When employers work positively with unions everyone benefits.

All the best in the good fight.

Cheryl
