[Eril-l] [EXT] Re: Open Position University of Pittsburgh - Electronic Resource Specialist

I also noticed how low this salary is, even when taking into account the variance in cost of living across the country, particularly for this highly skilled work.

However, we know that salaries, hiring, and job classifications are often outside the library's control. It would be interesting to hear more about the calculations that went into this offer, the constraints libraries are operating under, and the strategies we might use to pressure our institutions or governments to offer a living wage.

I have become very concerned about salary stagnation across all levels of library work and the poverty wages paid to our lowest-paid paraprofessionals. Municipalities in my area have experienced a 30% cost of living increase in the last 3 years, but many local libraries are not able to give raises or offer a salary attractive to people with this skill set (electronic resources, data analytics, cataloging, IT-type work).

What can we library hiring managers do to better advocate for both our operational needs AND the human beings who work for us?

Saw this ad, and am appalled at the below poverty-level salary for this, especially since the University of Pittsburgh values "human dignity." The low end of the salary range is roughly $10 per hour. Libraries are struggling to find librarians who can do this specialized type of work, and to make this a staff job that pays less than Chipotle is criminal. What does this say about our profession?
