Assistant/Associate Professor - Head of Technical Services Librarian

The Technical Services Department provides discovery and access to information resources of Milner Library and supports the teaching, learning, and scholarly activities of the Illinois State University community. The Department is responsible for the acquisition and processing of resources in all formats, electronic resources management and licensing, cataloging processes, and the metadata creation, enhancement and discovery for physical and digital content. The team of thirteen individuals bring varying skills and experience: four librarians, three coordinators, and six classified staff. The Department desires an engaged leader with strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively guide a team of diverse talent in an atmosphere of continuous change. This position will be responsible for conveying current trends and best practices in technical services and will be committed to problem-solving at local, regional, national, and international levels within a rapidly evolving library landscape. As discovery and access tools change and adapt to support new services in scholarly resources and communications, the successful candidate must implement innovative approaches to meet evolving user needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Directly supervises two faculty members (Special Collections & Formats Cataloging Librarian and Cataloging & Metadata Librarian) and four classified staff (Acquisitions
Librarian, Binding/Processing Coordinator, Cataloging Coordinator, Electronic Resources Librarian) and indirectly supervises seven classified staff in acquisitions, electronic resources, and cataloging units.
• Plans, implements, evaluates, and prioritizes operations in consultation with other library departments. Establishes policies and procedures to ensure timely services to users and in compliance with national and international standards and practices.
• Monitors and analyzes new technologies and pursues advancements to help achieve objectives and improve efficiencies of the Department.
• Oversees and develops solutions for data quality issues and provides guidance and support in the efficient management of the integrated library system for resource
management functions.
• Represents the library to the vendor community as needed, including participation in negotiating with vendors, subscription agents, consortia, publishers, national bibliographic utilities and other content providers.
• Fosters a team environment and encourages employee development through mentorship while overseeing complex operations and specialized projects. Identifies needs and seeks relevant training opportunities to support the growth of the Department.
• Participates in the data analysis of internal and external statistic reports to improve and document work outcomes and project management.
• Acts as technical services liaison to the two university laboratory school libraries.

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or ALA-recognized foreign equivalent.
• Experience in one or more technical services units, such as acquisitions, electronic resources, metadata management, or monographic/serials cataloging.
• Technical knowledge of and experience working in a unified library services platform or integrated library systems, and other applications used in libraries.
• Familiarity with best practices and trends in library technology and systems related to acquisitions, electronic resource management, or knowledge organization.
• Demonstrated aptitude for project planning and management.
• Written communication skills, as evidenced by submitted materials.
• Evidence of research activity or commitment to continued professional development.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience leading, supervising, and mentoring personnel.
• Demonstrated experience managing the workflow of one or more technical services units, such as acquisitions, electronic resources, metadata management, or monographic/serials cataloging.
• Experience with the library services platform Ex Libris Alma and Primo VE discovery system.
• Strong analytical and assessment skills, with a preference for demonstrated experience using Alma Analytics.

Proposed Starting Date: July 1, 2022

The Head of Technical Services Librarian is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. 24 vacation days and 11 paid holidays per year.
