[Eril-l] SciFinder from off campus

Thanks everyone who replied off list. The responses were mixed, with some having no issues with SciFinder from off campus, and others having problems. A common recommendation was to make sure CAS has your correct IP ranges.

I had one of our tech savvy librarians make an account from off campus (EZProxied registration link), then access from off campus (EZProxied link), and she was able to do so, no VPN required. It may be that our chemistry folks are just so used to seamless access to SciFinder, that having to use EZProxy and/or VPN is too much of a hurdle.

Also it seems like password resets cannot be done with EZProxy, i.e. they have to be done via VPN. Or you have to contact CAS directly. There's no option in the Admin account to reset user passwords.

Subject: [Eril-l] SciFinder from off campus

Hi all,

Here's another installment of "Residential College Distance Learning Problems." A chemistry class is running into all kinds of issues with SciFinder. Registering for an account, resetting passwords for an account, then getting access into SciFinder itself. We use EZProxy.

Our campus has a VPN system which students can log into, to gain access to campus terminals that present a campus IP address. However it presents a hurdle for some (you have to install the VPN system on a device, then log into it, then log into the terminal, which runs a bit slowly).

We have a SciFinder user registration link with the correct IP ranges.

My question to other SciFinder subscribers with EZProxy: how do you manage off campus users? Are you running into these issues? I seldom interact with SciFinder and it seems it has been largely used from on campus in the past.

Thanks,
