[Eril-l] ACS and pay-per-view - would you be interested?

I don’t think I’d characterize what we pay as any kind of sweetheart deal, just that our users do their part and use this resource heavily. I am verklempt every time I go to pay the invoice, but being an engineering/science focused institution there’s not really any way of not subscribing to some of these things.

Of course, being the accrediting agency AND the publisher is a pretty sweet deal, must be nice to require your own content for accreditation.

So the big consortia systems get amazing deals such that the impact on any one library is minimal. Those of us without opportunities to be part of these systems have little bargaining power, especially since the same body that accredits our program sells us the content required for accreditation. How far is this really from a protection racket? But ACS members won't change it. In theory they could, right? It's a membership organization? There are more benefits to members than libraries see, apparently.

We get ACS as part of the University of Texas system, so our pricing may be a tad lower than others due to consortial arrangements.

Just took a look at our last invoice for Web Editions and our 2017 COUNTER JR1, and we're running about $6 per ft use, so I'd guess they would not be willing to have a pay per view below that.
Most of us probably can't reveal our actual contract price (nondisclosure agreements) but I don't think anything prohibits us from sharing our cost per use, so I'd be interested in how ours compares with others.
We're a small university, under 5,000 FTE, without a graduate level program in chemistry.

They do sort of have a pay-per-view option, by purchasing groups of tokens. They are also not cheap. I'd be more interested in notifying our patrons which titles are included in our subscriptions and which ones are not. We have the Academic Collection w/250 tokens, but there's no way to indicate to users which ones we have access to and which will use a token.

I have suggested to American Chemical Society adding a pay-per-view option instead of their subscription packages. I’m told they don’t offer that option. I’m just wondering, how many schools out there would be interested in a Pay-per-view option of ACS titles? We are a very small school, and the prices for ACS are not sustainable and are very hard to justify outside accreditation requirements. I’m feeling very frustrated actually. Am I the only one??
Venting, and also want to see how many others feel the same way and what you have done to offset the cost.
Thanks
