Hi all: I just received this message from OUP.  Interesting....

"I'm sorry for the many problems that you have had in accessing Oxford Journals this week. We have had a lot of difficulty in pinpointing the problem, as our changes to the site earlier this week seems to have affected some customers negatively, and not affected others at all. So, we are rolling back the changes we made to the site until we can diagnose the problem. A message will be going out to all of the accounts that have reported problems, but I want to let you know ahead of that message what is happening. Here is the message we will be sending:

As you know, OUP recently moved all journal content onto https: web pages to provide more secure browsing access to OUP-hosted journals.  This change has resulted in problems with access to OUP content for some users.

We apologise for the inconvenience customers have experienced with access following the switchover. While we work to resolve these issues, we will dual host our journals on both the http and https versions of our platform, which should restore access immediately. Customers may need to clear their cache if they had experienced access issues previously. Any users who have made recent updates in line with advice from our Customer Services team should not be disrupted by this change.

We are also using EZproxy and Serials Solutions, as well as the ProQuest Summon discovery service.


-         For us, OUP articles are accessible through Summon, both current titles in the journal/OUP platform and back issues through JSTOR.

-         As of this morning, the Serials Solutions A-Z journal list links still point to http and do not redirect properly, whether in-house or proxied - I have opened a case with ProQuest about this, and based on Daniel's email below I'm assuming we can expect this to be fixed soon.

-         Manually changing links to https only works to some extent - we can access the journal pages, but browsing archives w/in the OUP platform is hit and miss. As of this morning, links through databases like PubMed & Ovid also do not resolve or redirect. These problems persist across browsers.

I have asked our proxy admin to check on the security certificate issue, as suggested by Oxford. If there is something we need to change on our end, that's fine - but we really could have used a heads-up about it so we could address the issue before it became an actual problem for our patrons.

I have not yet received anything but the canned response from both OUP and ProQuest support, so I will continue watching this thread to see if anyone else who is experiencing this issue gets a resolution. If we get a resolution, I will share it here as well.

We are an EZproxy and Serials Solutions library. I had hoped the below report that Oxford title-level links were changed to the "https" format yesterday would fix the linking issue today. However, that is not the case.



In Serials Solutions, I now see two URLs (the http and the https) in each journal record activated for Oxford. When I tried to link through my A-Z list, the "http" version is still the link that is active for users, however. Maybe Serials Solutions still needs to go through one more cache update?

Serials Solutions/ProQuest Workflow Solutions has updated their title-level links, which should be live to users tomorrow. Summon direct linking uses the DOI, which will require an OUP update of the data at CrossRef.

Hear, hear!  Instead of sharing news of this impending change, we found out about it when our users couldn't access Oxford content, with no chance for proactive measures.  And talk of a "solution" leaves us unclear as to whether we need to make local fixes or if Oxford is working on it.  This was poorly handled.

Athena is so right about the browser and other issues...and on top of these problems, they are claiming that the change is working for most of their customers and only some libraries are effected.

It seems that Oxford created a problem that affects the majority (if not all) of their customers, but is responding as if it were a problem caused by individual browsers and institutional settings.

This sentence troubles me because it may mislead libraries into hunting for the Oxford Journals SSL certificate or trying to "set up [the certificate] for Oxfordjournals.org":
the institution will need to have an SSL certificate installed and set-up for the Oxfordjournals.org domain

Typically, libraries will have an SSL certificate for their EZproxy.  They would then put the appropriate vendor stanza in the config.txt file.  We at UCF have a SSL certificate and access many eResources that use SSL/https. They did not give us any problems, even during their transition from http to https.

I implore Oxford to find a solution that works for their customers. This is not a library-by-library problem.

OUP links do not work from Pubmed, Scopus nor Web of Science, the dois from CrossRef do not resolve, ( and I thought that was the whole point of having dois, that it doesn't matter if the publisher changes urls...) and the ezproxy stanza from the OUP page is
out of date http://www.oxfordjournals.org/en/help/tech-info/ezproxyconfig.txt.

I think that everyone is having problems with OUP.

In order to provide more secure browsing access to OUP hosted journals, we have moved all our journals to be hosted on https: web pages. This change took effect yesterday, and should be transparent to most customers. Our IT department is working to replicate customer issues now.
