ArtCenter College of Design Library is searching for an experienced Metadata Librarian to join our team.
Job title: Metadata Librarian
Reports to: Director, Collections and Systems
Supervises: Assistant Cataloger, student workers
FLSA status: Exempt
Salary grade: 9
Salary range: $62,400 - $75,000
Job Summary
As a part of the Collections & Systems department, this position oversees the Assistant Cataloger, student workers, and occasional interns or temporary catalogers. Helps develop and administer cross-departmental strategic projects such as implementing new catalog-related technologies and creating efficient workflows. Manages projects and trains staff. Responsibilities include working closely with the department on ILS management, serving as the primary contact to OCLC, and creating and maintaining access to print, electronic, and multimedia format material.
Qualifications
● MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program
● Thorough knowledge of electronic and traditional cataloging, classification, and authority control, as well as current standards (RDA, AACR2R, LCSH, LCC, Dewey, MARC21, BIBFRAME, RDF, RDFa, FRBR), trends, and emerging technologies in collections management
● At least 5 years post-MLS cataloging and technical services experience in an academic, special, or public library and a minimum 2 years supervisory experience
● Innovative and tech-savvy with strong problem-solving and logic skills and aptitude for troubleshooting
● Collaboration skills, demonstrated success working on teams, and willingness to share expertise with colleagues
● Demonstrated experience organizing or managing projects, balancing priorities, and setting and meeting deadlines
● Proficiency using spreadsheets and other data analysis tools and manipulating data using Excel, MarcEdit, and/or OpenRefine
● Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to learn new technologies and metadata standards and adapt to changes in the profession
● Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills
● Detail-oriented, highly organized, able to adapt
● Forward thinking, takes initiative, reliable and resourceful
● Commitment to user-centered library services
● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and a demonstrated commitment to diversity including awareness of the role of knowledge systems in systemic oppression, remediation of institutional biases inherent in cataloging and metadata, and collection assessment to determine how well collections represent diverse cultures and perspectives
Preferred Qualifications
● Academic library experience with subject knowledge of art and design
● Familiarity with library acquisitions, shelf-ready books, electronic resource management, discovery services, knowledge bases, and proxies
● Experience with Innovative Interfaces’ Sierra ILS, EBSCO Discovery System and Holdings Management, OCLC Connexion Client and Collection Manager, EZproxy, ClassWeb, MarcEdit, GOBI, Springshare suite
● Knowledge of linked data and semantic web applications and IT skills such as scripting, regular expressions, FTP, SQL, OAI-PMH, APIs, etc. used in technical services
● Experience with batch loading, editing, and deleting of catalog records
● Ability to work in a fast-paced library environment with changing priorities
● Understanding of copyright and fair use as it relates to academic libraries and digital repositories
Essential Functions
Bibliographic Technical Services — 35%
● Perform and advise on data migration, harvesting, and syncing projects for discovery services, catalog enhancements, institutional repositories, etc.
● Provide expertise regarding innovations and trends relating to the discovery and access of library materials and proactively work in partnership with departmental staff to improve access and workflow efficiencies
● Exploration and implementation of linked data
● Refresh and maintain OCLC holdings data to include the full cycle of creation, updating and deletion based on library holdings
● Manage conversion projects such as RFID, AACR2 to RDA, and Dewey to LC Classification
● Automate manual processes through use of schedulers and/or APIs
● Direct batch loading and deleting activities, global editing of local bibliographic and metadata records, and maintenance and creation of record load profiles and cataloging templates
● Problem solve and troubleshoot technical issues
● Assist with installation, integration, migration and implementation of library software
● Provide technical guidance with data querying and automation of processes for library staff
Cataloging — 25%
● Perform original, complex adaptive, and copy cataloging in all formats, including books, serials, audio-visual, digital and electronic resources and maintain records for library materials to facilitate access and discovery
● Catalog materials in a variety of subject areas focusing on art and design through use of the integrated library system (Sierra), a national library database (OCLC Connexion Client), and standards for classification and subject terminology (DDC, LC, LCSH)
● Create authorities by individual downloads from OCLC or originally; work to convert legacy non-OCLC/LCSH authorities to these forms; follow national standards along with customized departmental standards
● Provide expertise in the areas of cataloging and serials to library staff
Maintaining Data Integrity — 20%
● Responsible for oversight of all aspects of record quality, authority control, and catalog integrity
● Assess metadata accuracy, ensure records meet local and national standards, and remediate problems
● Perform regular maintenance of metadata to keep up with changes in standards, formats, shifting collections, vendor platforms, and the Library systems, as well as improving user experience
● Oversee inventory projects and assist in the ongoing deselection or storage of the collection
● Integrate records with storage retrieval and shared print program ensuring metadata linking across platforms
● Develop training materials and documentation for library staff in the application of metadata standards and cataloging policy and procedures, workflows, and local practice on wiki and document-sharing sites
Supervision — 10%
● Supervise one full-time assistant cataloger
● Train, schedule, and supervise student workers and interns assisting with cataloging and book processing
● Manage workflows and projects using cloud-based project management platform (Asana)
● Collaborate with the department to develop goals, priorities, policies, and procedures
Statistics and Data Analysis — 5%
● Provide assistance with GreenGlass collection analysis
● Query data and gather statistics for analysis, reporting, surveys (ACRL, IPEDs, etc.), and evidence-based decision making
● Facilitate analytic reporting from various systems and use a variety of software tools for the extraction, manipulation, and visualization of data for use by various systems
Miscellaneous Job Functions — 5%
● Maintain current knowledge of technology, collections management, and metadata emerging trends and best practices in academic libraries via professional communications and continuing education
● Maintain memberships and active involvement in applicable professional organizations
● Perform related duties as assigned to meet departmental, library, and institutional priorities, goals, and objectives
● Incumbent has the option to participate in reference services
● May be assigned special projects related to the Library as needed
● Serve on college-wide committees
