Core webinar: Web Accessibility Beyond Best Intentions

Date: Wednesday, May 25, 2021

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: Implementing web accessibility in libraries requires more than
an educated site administrator. Managers need to be backed up with
institutional changes to accessibility language in procurement policies and
a budget to purchase necessary software. Lay leaders are needed to model
accessibility in-house. Trained staff are needed to create public facing
library communications. While I've never met a librarian who doesn't care
about accessibility, it takes more than good intentions.

In 2014, the Library of Michigan and the Michigan Department of Education
were the first agencies to enter into a web accessibility consent decree
with the U.S. Department of Justice. As site administrator for LM, I've
implemented, enforced, and revisited methods to maintain an accessible
digital footprint over the past seven years. Learn from our successes as
well as our mistakes.

This webinar also speaks to the low-hanging fruit that all libraries
(including small and rural libraries without dedicated technology staff)
can adopt immediately. This is not an accessible code Ask Me Anything
session; it's about the policies and skills needed to implement and
maintain an accessible digital footprint.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

   -

Identify the supports that library managers and staff need in order to
implement or maintain an accessible web presence.
   -

Discuss pros and cons of accessibility policies including whether to
require education for all staff and as a part of the onboarding process.
   -

Evaluate where their library stands on a number of accessibility
   indicators.

Who should attend?

This webinar speaks directly to the policy needs of library directors and
technology staff regarding accessibility.

Presenter:

Sonya Schryer Norris learned to write HTML while working with screen reader
users at the Braille and Talking Book Library in 1999. She has served as
website administrator for the Library of Michigan since 2002 and maintains
responsibility for Accessibility and User Experience of LM's web products.
In 2020, Sonya was charged with instructional design responsibilities and
started a series on website accessibility for public libraries; it's
available in the Niche Academy Marketplace.
