Job Description
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Library and Information Services invites applications from dynamic, proactive, and service-oriented candidates for the position of Scholarly Communications Librarian. The incumbent will lead the Library's scholarly communication program by setting directions, managing projects and educating the SIUE community.

As a member of the library faculty, this position participates in library governance activities, provides expertise regarding innovations and trends relating to the discovery and access of library materials, contributes to creative and scholarly research, and participates in campus-wide committees.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
*         Serves as the Library's expert on copyright compliance, fair use, and other scholarly communication matters for all stakeholders including the Graduate School, Office of the General Counsel, other units for sponsored research, Information Technology Services, academic departments, and university administrators.
*         Manages SIUE's institutional repository (SPARK) through the Bepress platform and serves as the university's public access compliance monitor.
*         Develops and implements programs to increase awareness among SIUE faculty, researchers, staff, and students about scholarly communication issues in the digital environment as they impact academia and research libraries (e.g. copyright compliance, fair use, rights to their own scholarship, deposit responsibilities, and privacy rights).
*         Educates faculty and students regarding traditional scholarship and scholarly communication innovations, including open access, open educational resources (OER), intellectual property rights and copyright, publishing agreements, and compliance, especially with federal public access mandates.
*         Articulates and promotes the importance of contributing scholarship and creative activities to SPARK.
*         Instructs faculty members about assessing the scholarly impact of their research and scholarship through the use of journal, author, citation, and alternative metrics.
*         Establish mechanisms to assist faculty with publishing choices, publishing agreements, and management of copyright and intellectual property.
*         Advises and supports the library's instructional programs and the development of online courses.
*         Prepares a comprehensive set of internal training and professional development opportunities to strengthen faculty and staff competencies in copyright and intellectual property.
*         Monitors national scholarly communication trends and policy issues, informs and educates the SIUE community of their significance, and participates in campus efforts to ensure that scholars, students, and the Library retain full benefits of the current and evolving intellectual property system.

Minimum Qualifications
M.L.S. or equivalent degree in information science from an American Library Association-accredited library/information school.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
-Planning and leadership skills, with the ability to function independently, take initiative, and set goals and priorities in a dynamic changing environment.
-Demonstrated knowledge of institutional repositories and the ability to communicate their benefits and address issues related to their use.
-Excellent oral and written communication skills.
-Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive and productive collaborations working with diverse audiences, constituencies, and colleagues including faculty, students, administrators, consortia partners, and national organizations.
-Demonstrated work experience in an academic or research library.

Preferred Qualifications
-Demonstrated record of course work in and knowledge of issues relating to scholarly communication, rights management, open access, and institutional repository platforms and software.
-Experience in preparing and delivering scholarly communication, copyright, and fair use instruction for different audiences, individually and in groups or forums, on campus.
-Thorough understanding of trends about digital content and the ability to communicate changes, requirements, and benefits to faculty, students, and researchers across campus.
-Understanding of variations in publication and communication patterns in various scholarly disciplines.

All LIS faculty and staff are responsible for working collaboratively to achieve University and LIS goals and objectives.

Salary
Minimum of $50,000. Negotiable dependent upon credentials and experience. We welcome early career librarians. Salary is dependent upon post-MLS experience and credentials. Excellent benefits program.

Terms of Appointment
Assistant or Associate Professor, 12-month continuing contract, tenure-track position. To successfully achieve tenure, the successful candidate must demonstrate continued achievement in librarianship, scholarship and service in order to meet library and University criteria for tenure and promotion.
