[Eril-l] ACS Journal Packages

One option that ACS (and Nature for that matter) does not provide is an interstitial page that warns a user that a token is being used. ScienceDirect and Wiley both have a confirmation page that lets users know what is happening. Wiley just updated their site to mark each article as “Token Access” up front and has a confirmation page before the PDF is loaded. I think having that confirmation page helps with indiscriminate downloading, at least for our users. I’ve asked our sales rep and support for years to add a confirmation page, but so far it hasn’t happened.

We also dropped the "all pubs" package about 6 years ago and also dropped the archives. ACS allowed us to customize the Core package, selecting 14 of our most-used journals in addition to Chemical & Engineering News Global Enterprises and Journal of Chemical Education. We also blow through our 250 tokens by April or May.
Almost every year, our Chemistry program has year-end money and asks us to buy more tokens. They are extremely expensive, but we get them as long as we're using their funds. If we were to move to a token-only system, we'd pay much more than what we're paying for the customized Core package based on our usage stats. We've tried repeatedly to get our chemistry faculty to use ILL for non-subscribed articles, but they don't use it, even though we'd get most of the articles via RapidILL within hours.

Those would also be good options, Lynne, but I haven’t found any way to do either of those types of mediation.
Maybe someone can prove me wrong? I’d love that!

Are there any administrative options for tokens? Can you mediate their use in any way - restrict them to faculty/grad students, etc.?
Thanks,
Lynne

About 6 years ago we canceled the “buffet” and went with the Academic Core with 250 tokens due to cost increases our budget couldn’t support. We usually blow through our 250 tokens about April. I would LOVE it if we had an administrative way to restrict the tokens to the current content and deal with requests for archival content through PPV or ILL.

Hi All,
Has any one who works at an institution of higher education in the U.S. with an accredited Chemistry program canceled their ACS subscriptions and just gone to a token model for access?
Curious to know if this has worked for anyone?
If not, has anyone regardless of Chemistry program accreditation, used the just the token program with ACS titles & if so, how do you think it works for you?
Thanks in advance for any information provided.
-Jill
