How about a library centric resource/reading list system? http://helibtech.com/Reading_Resource%20lists. Many universities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand find these deliver a higher return on investment in term of (especially undergrad) users. They integrate with the ILS but perhaps more importantly the learning management system. Students love them! They provide a contextual (course) aspect to discovery highlighting (annotating) for example essential and background print and digital readings - even on a week by week basis
