ALCTS webinar: ArtFrame: Extending Library Ontologies for Works of Art

Date: Wednesday, April 4, 2018

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

This is the fourth session of a six-part series. View the other sessions
in this series
<http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/MARCtoBIBFRAME>.

This series of six webinars builds on the introductory series From MARC to
BIBFRAME: Linked Data on the Ground
<http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/MARCBIBFRAME>, which
was presented in fall 2016 and is now available free of charge. It
describes the continuing BIBFRAME initiatives taking place at the Library
of Congress as well as within the broader information community.

Description: ArtFrame <https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/LD4P/ArtFrame>,
led by Columbia University Libraries, is a domain-specific sub-project
of Linked
Data for Production (LD4P)
<https://wiki.duraspace.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=74515029>, a
Mellon-funded cross-institutional effort aimed at piloting the production
of linked data in libraries. The ArtFrame vocabulary is an extension of
BIBFRAME and LD4P/LD4L-Lab's bibliotek-o ontologies to describe works of
art (both two-dimensional and three-dimensional) natively as linked data.
This Webinar will discuss the work completed by Columbia staff and the
ArtFrame Extension Group, including use cases , modeling areas, tools,
outcomes, and lessons learned.

Learning outcomes:

• Introduce the Linked Data for Production (LD4P) project

• Introduce the ArtFrame domain-specific sub-project

• Review existing descriptive cataloging standards for works of art

• Review use cases for describing art objects as linked data within a
library environment

• Review and outline the modeling areas for ontology development to
describe art objects and their intrinsic and extrinsic properties

• Review tools that were used throughout the project

• Review outcomes of the project and lessons learned

Who should attend? Art librarians, metadata librarians, catalogers, and
catalog librarians

Presenters:

Melanie Wacker is Metadata Coordinator at Columbia University Libraries.
She works across the organization to ensure the integration of digital
metadata with local and national systems. Her responsibilities include
development of application profiles for digital collections, metadata
creation, training, consultations, and NACO/SACO work. Melanie is currently
the Columbia lead for her institution’s LD4P (Linked Data for Production)
project participation. She is active in several national and international
committees and task forces.

Amber Billey is the Metadata Librarian at Columbia University Libraries
where she works with colleagues to ensure the application of local and
national standards for the creation and maintenance of digital metadata to
enable information organization and discovery. Amber works with Melanie on
the the LD4P project and the ARTFRAME linked data ontology extension for
art objects. She is the Co-Chair of the PCC BIBFRAME Task Group, and a
member of the PCC Task Group on Identity Management in NACO.
