[Eril-l] Kanopy Streaming Videos - PDA program

Hi Marcia and Jennifer,

We held back from deploying the Kanopy PDA for fear of the triggers overwhelming our limited budget. We didn’t want to deploy Kanopy and then have to take it away if usage exploded. Instead, we turned on the “recommend this Kanopy film to your librarian” feature. We receive the requests directly, and fulfill 1 year licenses if it meets our on internal triggers for the dedicated funds. If we are not able to fulfill the request (i.e. subject area exhausted their dedicated Kanopy funds for faculty requests), we push to the liaison librarian to see if they want to use their subject funds for purchasing licenses. This is still in a trial phase, but seems to be working so far. It isn’t perfect, but at least we don’t have to take anything away. I wish that more titles were available for perpetual access licenses.

Best,
Marianne

Hi Marcia,

We have been doing Kanopy PDA for several years, and we have seen the same increases and trends this past year that you noted. I spoke with someone at Kanopy about my concerns, and they felt it was partly a result of our patrons becoming more comfortable and familiar with the platform. In other words, patrons are now searching in Kanopy for all their video needs rather than just heading there when an assignment requires them to visit the site. We're also seeing many films triggered two and three times over the course of our PDA program with them. The Kanopy rep didn't provide me with any solutions or options to combat the spending increases, which if they continue, may be unsustainable for us.

One thing that I did recently was to turn off the "recommend this Kanopy film to your librarian" feature. We don't have all of the subjects enabled in our profile, but I was getting a lot of one-off requests from faculty and students who would find a video on Kanopy that wasn't in our pool (and/or wasn't available for PDA) and ask for us to purchase it. In some cases we were able to add those, but not always.

We have not yet removed any of our currently available subjects, but if it comes to that, we will probably look at usage (on non-triggered films) and relevance of the subject area to our curriculum.

If anyone else has other solutions, I would also be curious to hear about them.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Good Morning,

Since the beginning of the year our library has seen a significant increase in invoice totals for our subscription to Kanopy’s PDA subscription. We are now being invoiced monthly, instead of quarterly (which it looks like were in 2017) and our totals for the monthly invoices are equaling the quarterly ones from last year. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed anything similar?

If so, has anyone made changes to their approaches in making these accessible? We currently have all subject categories available for our users to access – has anyone begun turning any of these off? If you have, how are you selecting which subjects are hidden and which you are leaving “on”?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your help. ☺
