E-Resources Technology Specialist

The Serials and Electronic Resources Team within the Princeton University Library seeks candidates for the position of Technology Specialist, E-Resources Support. The Library's electronic resources collection is comprised of research databases, electronic journals, and other online resources in support of the University's academic disciplines. The collection includes a sizeable number of national and international statistical datasets used heavily for research in the Library's Data and Statistical Services center.

The successful candidate will provide support to the team leader and other members of the team and will be responsible primarily for a range of activities contributing to the Library's bibliographic control of electronic resources in all languages. The position is a member of the Serials and Electronic Resources Team, located in the Library's off-campus Technical Services Division offices.

Responsibilities include:


*         Acquisition of data files from vendors and other sources

*         Evaluating the quality of data and bulk-editing the files as needed using MarcEdit and other automation tools

*         Creating scripts to load bibliographic records

*         Creating scripts and/or other automated processes to streamline routine data conversion tasks on record sets prior to loading.

Record sets are acquired from over 200 different sources, each of which requires customized review and scripting to ensure they will load properly and provide the best access for Princeton users; quality of the acquired data varies dramatically.  A variety of technological tools are used to investigate sources for bibliographic data, manipulate and load records to support discovery, and troubleshoot access problems. Tools currently in use include MarcEdit, XSLT, oXygen, and Microsoft Access and the Technology Specialist will be responsible for using these tools to convert and manipulate data for digital projects and contribute to other large-scale data-related projects.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS


*         Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or comparable experience working in an academic environment;

*         Minimum of three years related experience;

*         Experience managing and transforming data in bulk using scripts, macros, and applications (for example: OpenRefine, XQuery, XSLT, MarcEdit, etc.);

*         Experience designing database and spreadsheet applications to gather and analyze data.

*         Strong communication skills both written and verbal.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


*         Master's degree in Library Science (MLS);

*         Experience using MarcEdit;

*         Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages;

*         Experience using collaborative and project management tools (e.g., GitHub, Slack, etc.);

*         Experience configuring and maintaining a link resolver and/or ERMS;

*         MARC serials and e-resource cataloging experience in an academic context using AACR2 or RDA and/or NACO experience;

*         Knowledge of linked data, RDF and semantic web principles.
