Dear Kathy,
I wonder if you have thought of using a UX/innovation method that is widely used to both develop new solutions and evaluate existing ones. Jobs-To-Be-Done (JTBD) focuses not on *feature* comparisons but instead on how well a new or existing solution solves the users’ problems...gets the user’s ‘job’ done. For example if a user is trying to get their assignment done how well does the discovery solution take away the user’s ‘pain’ or create ‘gains’ .
I did some really interesting workshops earlier this year around JTBD and discovery with a some fantastic librarians at a Scottish university. It wasn’t so much around evaluating as looking a ‘gaps’ and how things could be improved with an existing suite of solutions. But JTBD is a good approach to evaluation of any potential solution too.
There is a large and readily available literature around JTBD. My take on it (specifically using it in a University Library context) is here http://www.kenchadconsulting.com/how-we-can-help/innovation/ . I’ve also done a few presentations. I have found JTBD a *very* productive user centric approach.
Good luck with the evaluation. There are some useful links on more conventional evaluations on the Higher Education Library Technology (HELibTech) discovery page http://helibtech.com/Discovery
Very best
Ken

Subject: [Eril-l] Discovery System Comparison
We are coming to the end of a 3 year contract for our current discovery system, and are starting a trial for another system. I am trying to come up with an effective way of evaluating and comparing the two systems in order to make a decision about which one to go forward with. Has anyone done this recently and do you have any advice/ warnings/ ideas/ suggestions, etc?
Thanks,
Kathy
