[Eril-l] Which Conference?

Kathy,
I have been a serials librarian for over 30 years. I have been attending both ALA and NASIG for almost the entire time. NASIG is highly recommended, and, ALA is also recommended because it offers everything for libraries. There is some duplication, but there is information that is not present in both. NASIG is more fun than ALA as it is easier to get to know people on a one-to-one level and easier to find other people who do the same job you do, for advice and experiences that would benefit you. ALA can be overwhelming and more difficult to get to know people, but the number of vendors that attend ALA is huge and can take hours just to go through the exhibits. ALA is worth it just for the experience and for seeing what vendors are doing in your areas.
Regardless, you should check out NASIG’s and ALA’s web sites to help you make a decision. Also, if you itemize your taxes, you can deduct your registration, travel, hotel and even your food off of your income taxes as professional expenses. If you are a union member, you may be able to take your union dues off your income taxes as well, in the miscellaneous section.
Yours truly,
Mitch L Turitz

What would be your collective recommendations as to which one to attend, as a"newbie"? My goal is to learn as much as possible about not only Electronic Resources management but Print serials management as well. So far I am considering The ER & L conference in Austin in April, and the NC Serials conference in March. I would also consider the Charleston Conference in November, (although it's not focused solely on electronic resources and may be too large for a first timer? )
