[Eril-l] Measuring success in electronic resources

Hi Eric,

Do you usually purchase electronic resources upon faculty / student request or by speculative selection? If you purchase items on request, you might be able to use the amount of time between the request and when you notify that person that it is ready to use.

You may be able to use COUNTER's access denied reports to approximate what you were aiming for with the helpdesk statistics. You might also consider setting up a time period for someone, such as a student worker, to do periodic checks on your resources.

You could also track the number of issues you record in CORAL for the vendor. Or, perhaps, you could track the number of messages in your entire communication chain with the vendor or the number of actions you need to take in your administrative portal. (There are some vendors I know from experience will need multiple communications to accomplish a task, whereas others are much more responsive.)

Good luck,

Erin

Subject: [Eril-l] Measuring success in electronic resources

Hello,

We recently brought in a LEAN consultant to help us examine our workflows and improve efficiency. While most of the work has been done with our physical item workflows, we've just begun looking at electronic resources. One of the things he's interested in is how we can measure success. With a physical item, this is fairly simple. For example, with a book, one measure is how quickly we get it on the shelf after it's been received. Because the process for acquiring, setting up, and maintaining an ejournal or database is quite different, we're having some trouble coming up with similar metrics for electronic resources. One area we looked into is helpdesk statistics but this seems like a dead end - we receive so few of them that there doesn't seem to be any discernable pattern. Does anyone have suggestions of metrics for measuring how successful your electronic resource workflows are?

Thanks,
Eric
