[Eril-l] Extend library e-resource access to retired faculty?

Linda’s scenario pretty much matches our own. Professors emeriti are treated the same current faculty, staff, and students.

We also have just begun offering alumni access for one database (ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials), but that is something we are paying extra for, and the library is absorbing that cost, not our alumni organization.

Some time ago I queried the ERIL community about justifications used for providing alumni access. Locally it was felt by some that ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials was justifiable whereas JSTOR access was not. I’m not sure I understand or agree with the difference or reasoning, so the responses I received from this discussion list to that separate query were helpful.

Hi Donna,

We have a category of retired faculty, faculty emeritus. Faculty emeritus status is granted after nomination by colleagues and approval by the Academic Senate and President. Eligible faculty have worked at the College over 10 years as full-time faculty members and must also meet other criteria. Faculty emeritus status affords all the same privileges as active faculty, and they are included in our FTE counts when negotiating database licenses. We are attempting to define a similar nomination and approval process for selected retired staff.

We are also providing alumni access to a selection of databases, with funding support from the Alumni Office, including the Vault Career database.

Our alumni office provides access. I believe they completed a license which is separate from the library’s license, and it is limited to a specific selection of EBSCO resources. This is a blog post about that service when it was new (in 2012):

Do any libraries provide continued access to electronic resources as a benefit for retired faculty or college/university alumni? Do you have a policy about retired faculty or alumni access and is it even feasible given the different definitions of “Authorized Users” seen in database licenses? Do you have a written policy that you’re willing to share, on or off list?

Thank you,
