I totally agree. The Business and Computer Science Department requested that one of our group study room be converted so that students in the business classes could use the specialized terminal for their coursework. Unfortunately, and (thank goodness) they have since taken the terminal offline as the cost and the courses have been canceled.

My institution has one Bloomberg terminal in our Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center -- which is actually inside the main library -- but library staff do not manage/maintain/etc. it at all. The Center has their own staff and they are completely responsible for all aspects of it.

Hi Dana,

Business librarian here- I've been at UNC Chapel Hill in both the University Libraries & now the business school. Our b school has its own lab with Bloomberg Terminals, managed by a faculty member. The lab is open to users outside the b school when not in use by classes. The Libraries do not have anything to do with the Terminals. Even in my current role at the b school I do not have any responsbilities for licensing or maintaining access to the terminals other than referring patrons to the lab or the faculty member.

Highly recommend not getting your library involved in paying for specialized finance resources if possible. Costs are very high relative to other disciplinary resources and licensing/accessibility/etc can be challenging.

This blog post is about cost-sharing for WRDS, not Bloomberg Terminals, but perhaps of interest- https://liaisonlife.wordpress.com/2021/08/13/wrds-rabbit-hole/<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://liaisonlife.wordpress.com/2021/08/13/wrds-rabbit-hole/__;!!LNFZXuP2Dw!ehiSTUH80nFQZ2eTv7qWr5aKTmkeyFzXxU-bZeIpafJJPgUMKdiLd0XufM9zBhsxlNJQysMTPTvuGbtrvQLs3lLFpVI$>.

Hope this is helpful!

Hi Dana,

Our College of Business has Bloomberg Terminals located in their building. They are entirely responsible for the cost, contract, training, troubleshooting, etc. They didn't consult the library at all and in fact, if I didn't have a friend in the Finance Department, the library probably wouldn't even know they had the terminals. We are down to just five librarians for an FTE creeping up on 10,000, so we do not have subject librarians. Unfortunately, this means that we have limited relationships in a variety of departments. Other than accessing our tax database, the College of Business does not contact us. I almost wish we had a part in the Bloomberg Terminals because it may have been the foot in the door we needed to establish some kind of relationship. To my knowledge, they are managing the terminals fine on their own.

Best,
Stephanie

[EXTERNAL]

Looking for the collective wisdom of the list, and maybe a special ask from business librarians.

A new finance major has been proposed, and as part of the process for discussion and approval, me and the business library liaison had a conversation about library resource needs with the faculty proposing the program. Ultimately, a Bloomberg Terminal (or a few) would be the goal for providing most of the needs of this program in the next few years. Of course, expenses were discussed, but does anyone have experience with Bloomberg Terminals being located in your library or a split location/access policy with the departments that use them? Or do your business schools/departments have full responsibility for them, including the cost?

For context, we are the single library for the university, there are no departmental libraries.

Any other information you can provide about the resource is welcome.

Thank you in advance!

Dana
