**Apologies for cross posting**

The NISO Plus Global/Online virtual conference may have ended last week,
but there’s always something happening here! The next few weeks bring
several new events, including the start of our deep-dive, eight-week
training series on open research
<https://niso.org/events/open-research-2024-niso-training-series>, an
October webinar exploring solutions for making websites more accessible
<https://niso.org/events/practical-applications-improve-accessibility-your-website>,
and an open teleconference on the Open Discovery Initiative
<https://niso.org/events/2020/02/opentelecon-odi-2024>.

NISO TRAINING SERIES | STARTS TOMORROW!

Open Research
<https://www.niso.org/events/open-research-2024-niso-training-series>

Thursdays, 11:00 am–12:30 pm EDT (US/Canada)

September 26–November 21, 2024

Most professionals engaged in supporting or conducting research have heard
of various aspects of open science and scholarship. But how well do we
understand the principles and practices underlying open research? And how
can we apply knowledge of open research in our own institutional and
organizational contexts? From preregistration and preprints to metadata and
open access, this course will help you navigate the open research landscape
in lively, information-packed sessions using the research cycle as a
framework.

You will learn how open research concepts and practices are applied by
researchers and supported by librarians, data managers, and other
professionals. Each 90-minute session will combine presentation,
demonstrations, hands-on exploration, and discussion. Participants will
leave the course with knowledge and insights but also with ideas and
inspiration to include open research perspectives and practices in their
own roles and contexts.

Training Facilitators: Bianca Kramer, Librarian for Life Sciences and
Medicine, Utrecht University, and Jeroen Bosman, Scholarly Communications

Practical Applications to Improve the Accessibility of Your Website
<https://niso.org/events/practical-applications-improve-accessibility-your-website>

Wednesday, October 9, 11:00 am–12:00 pm EDT (US/Canada)

Websites can pose a particular challenge to individuals with disabilities,
especially if they require a variety of actions to explore or access
information. Library websites require navigation through a variety of
imagery, text, search functions, and authentication portals. Inaccessible
web design, images without descriptive alternative text, or complex
features can impede user success. This program explores the core principles
of web accessibility and offers participants insights to identify common
barriers to usability as well as some practical solutions to improve user
experience.

Speakers: Stacy Scott, Head of Accessibility, Taylor & Francis Group and Aj
Ahmed, Accessibility Trainer, AAT Solutions.

Registration is not required for NISO members. Non-NISO members, please
register

OPEN TELECONFERENCE | FREE AND OPEN TO ALL

Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) Update <https://niso.org/events>

Monday, October 21, 3:00–4:00pm (US/Canada)

Join NISO and the Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) Standing Committee
co-chairs to discuss the committee's current work, including the new
"Demystifying Discovery" video series.

The Open Discovery Initiative (ODI) aims to define standards and best
practices for the new generation of library discovery services that are
based on indexed search. These discovery services are primarily based upon
indexes derived from journals, ebooks, and other electronic information of
a scholarly nature. The content comes from a range of information providers
and products—commercial, open access, institutional, etc.

Given the growing interest and activity in the interactions between
information providers and discovery services, a more standard set of
practices is required for the ways that content is represented in discovery
services and for the interactions between the creators of these services
and the information providers whose resources they represent.

Speakers: Keondra Bailey, Assistant Standards Program Manager, NISO; Rachel
Kessler, Senior Project Manager, Proquest; and Ken Varnum, Senior Program
Manager and Discovery Strategist, University of Michigan Library *Registration
is not required for open teleconferences. See our *event page
<https://niso.org/events/2020/02/opentelecon-odi-2024> for dial-in
information.

We hope to see you soon at one of these upcoming events. In the meantime,
remember to visit our events page <https://www.niso.org/events/upcoming>
for the latest on programs, speakers, and additional professional
development opportunities!

Best wishes,
