We've kept our costs for Kanopy affordable by restricting the number of
producers in our PDA plan (only 10, with 1,236 titles); putting records for
those films in the catalog but NOT linking to Kanopy itself as a
smorgasbord database; and leasing or purchasing films on faculty request
for course use that are from producers other than the chosen 10. We also
have subscriptions to the much pricier Academic Video Online and FIlms on
Demand, plus a couple leased titles on Docuseek. We also still buy DVDs for
course excerpts/use in some cases. I was able to determine which producers
to pick, because we had a few initial years of the Kanopy "free-for-all"
PDA plan, in which all producers and packages were selected, before it got
too popular and expensive. Our FTE is just under 10K.
In 2023, we spent under 10K for what our users need from Kanopy:
$4,622.50 31 PDA titles from 10 activated producers
$1,735.80 8 upfront leases from other producers
$500.00 1 perpetual purchase from other producer
$6,858.30 TOTAL Kanopy cost
