Best of Core Forum: Burnout in Libraries: A Research & Advocacy Panel

Date: Tuesday, February 20, 2024

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description:

In a panel discussion led by Lynn Hoffman (Deputy Director, Somerset County
Library System of New Jersey), Matthew Weirick Johnson (Director of
Research & Instruction, University of South Florida) and Jessica Jones
(Library Director, Takoma Park Maryland Library) will discuss burnout in
libraries as researched and witnessed in both academic and public
institutions. Burnout is as persistent a topic in libraries as it is a
concern for the people who work in them. Building on the scholarship and
discussions around vocational awe, this panel will be equal parts research
and advocacy. We will look at how and why burnout is manifesting in library
staff so pervasively, as well as some ideas for changing our workplaces to
mitigate, ameliorate, and prevent further harm.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the webinar, attendees will be able to:

   -

   Define burnout
   -

Identify causes of burnout among library workers
   -

Describe how burnout manifests in individuals and organizations
   -

Consider proposed interventions for individuals and organizations

Who should attend?

May be relevant to many librarians across different types of libraries but
may be most useful for library leaders and managers as the presentation
considers causes and potential solutions for managing and mitigating
burnout among library workers.

Presenters:

Jessica Jones (she/her) has been the Library Director for the Takoma Park
Maryland Library since 2021, and she has previously served in library
leadership roles in both Texas and New Mexico. She has been working in
libraries since 2007, serving in academic, research, and public sectors, in
roles including technical services, reference, faculty, and administration.
Jessica is married to a climate scientist who helps her focus on a better
future for everyone, while their cats Falafel and Waffles remind her to be
present and to take time out for restorative practices.

Matthew Weirick Johnson is the Director of Research & Instruction on the
Tampa campus at the University of South Florida Libraries. They recently
published “Job Control and Its Impacts on Burnout in Academic Instruction
Librarians” in the Journal of Library Administration.

Lynn Hoffman is the Deputy Director for the Somerset County Library System
of New Jersey.
