**Apologies for cross posting**

September is a busy time at the National Information Standards
Organization! Next month’s offerings include a webinar on metadata and AI
<https://niso.org/events/importance-metadata-ai>, the launch of an
eight-week course on open research
<https://www.niso.org/events/open-research-2024-niso-training-series>, and
of course, our main event—the virtual NISO Plus Global/Online conference
<https://niso.plus/>, which will bring together information community
professionals from around the world to address the toughest challenges and
biggest opportunities facing scholarly communications!

MONTHLY ROUNDTABLE WEBINAR—FREE FOR NISO MEMBERS

*The Importance of Metadata in AI*
<https://niso.org/events/importance-metadata-ai>

*Wednesday, September 11, 11:00 am–12:00 pm EDT (US/Canada)*

Metadata provides critical context and information about the data used to
train and operate AI algorithms. It is the framework that shapes how AI
systems process, interpret, and generate insights from available data in
order to respond to queries. Through the presentation of case studies and
discussion, this program will investigate the impact of metadata on
algorithms, ethical considerations, and transparency.

*Speakers: Karim Boughida*, Dean, Stony Brook University Libraries; *Paul
Groth,* Professor of Algorithmic Data Science, University of
Amsterdam, and *Hong
Zhou,* Director of Intelligent Services Group and Head of AI R&D, Wiley
Partner Solutions.

*NISO Plus 2024 Global/Online* <https://niso.plus/>

*Tuesday–Wednesday, September 17–18*

NISO Plus Global/Online <https://niso.plus/> focuses on identifying
problems in the scholarly ecosystem that the community can solve together.
Its unique format fosters conversation, empowering attendees to brainstorm
potential solutions and generate ideas that could lead to future projects.

Proposed by members of the community and reviewed and selected by the NISO
Plus 2024–25 Planning Committee <https://niso.plus/np24-planning-committee/>,
sessions for the two-day, fully virtual event reflect a wide range of
interests and concerns in scholarly communications. The meeting program
<http://np24go.sched.com/> covers persistent identifiers and metadata;
emerging technologies and AI in scholarly publishing; research integrity;
open research and open research infrastructure; open data; and diversity,
equity, inclusion, and accessibility in scholarly communications. We’ll
also host updates on NISO standards projects as well as (new for 2024) a
special introduction to the information standards process.

With speakers representing libraries, publishers, and service/scholarly
infrastructure providers from around the world, the program offers a
variety of perspectives on challenges and opportunities in the global
information community. And the meeting will be held in two time blocks,
allowing for live participation across multiple time zones.

NISO TRAINING SERIES—EARLY BIRD DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 12

*Open Research*
<https://www.niso.org/events/open-research-2024-niso-training-series>

*Thursdays, 11:00 am–12:30 pm EDT (US/Canada)*

*September 26–November 21, 2024*

Most professionals engaged in supporting or conducting research have heard
of various aspects of open science and scholarship. But how well do we
understand the principles and practices underlying open research? And how
can we apply knowledge of open research in our own institutional and
organizational contexts? From preregistration and preprints to metadata and
open access, this course will help you navigate the open research landscape
in lively, information-packed sessions using the research cycle as a
framework.

You will learn how open research concepts and practices are applied by
researchers and supported by librarians, data managers, and other
professionals. Each 90-minute session will combine presentation,
demonstrations, hands-on exploration, and discussion. Participants will
leave the course with knowledge and insights but also with ideas and
inspiration to include open research perspectives and practices in their
own roles and contexts.

*Training Facilitators: Bianca Kramer,* Librarian for Life Sciences and
Medicine, Utrecht University, and *Jeroen Bosman*, Scholarly Communications
and Geoscience Librarian, Utrecht University

*See the NISO website **for the full program*
