*Core e-forum: Going the Distance: Thriving as a Long-Career Professional *

May 14-15, 2024

*Moderated by Julie Renee Moore and Mary Beth Weber*

Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone!

Registration information is at the end of the message.

Each day, discussion begins and ends at:

Central: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

*Description*

It’s been our observation that many opportunities (particularly for
grants/travel funds/professional development) are geared to new
professionals or early-career librarians. "New Leader Awards" encourage
early-career librarians to attend conferences, and are designed to propel
them into professional volunteerism. We’ve also seen opportunities for
mid-career librarians, who may be involved in a career change to assume
greater leadership responsibilities (for example, from catalog librarian to
head of cataloging or head of technical services).

· What we haven’t seen are opportunities geared toward the
late-career librarians. This is a missed opportunity since many of us are
still quite active in librarianship, at conferences, and with research and
scholarship. We also want to stay current with emerging trends and
recognize that learning is a continual process that benefits us, our
libraries, and our profession. Additionally, we have decades of experience
and knowledge to share in these spaces. Unfortunately, it often feels as if
we’re overlooked and unheard.

· We initiated the idea for this discussion to raise awareness.
Furthermore, we hope to start a conversation where participants can also
suggest professional development opportunities for the late-career
librarians in technical services. How can we change the environment to be
more inclusive? Employers want a diverse workforce, which includes
multigenerational employees. We hope that this eforum will help late-career
librarians to develop strategies to showcase their knowledge, skills and
experience. Join Julie Moore (California State University, Fresno with 35
years as a professional librarian) and Mary Beth Weber (Rutgers University
and 38 years as a professional librarian) for an eforum for late-career
librarians who don't want to retire or aren't ready to retire.

*Hosts*

Julie Renee Moore (California State University, Fresno, 35 years as a
professional librarian). Julie is an active member of ALA and OLAC. Her
most recent work includes co-authorship of OLAC Best Practices (2023), a
book chapter in Inclusive Cataloging: Histories, Context, and Reparative
Approaches (2024), and working on the Open Rules for Cataloging. She’s
presented on a variety of cataloging topics. She’s hosting two Fresno State
Special Collections cataloging exhibitions, "Unseen Labor" and "Words
Matter!"

Mary Beth Weber (Rutgers University, 38 years as a professional librarian)
is the head of Central Technical Services. Her work at Rutgers has included
digital projects, overseeing acquisitions in addition to cataloging, and
leading her department when the libraries migrated to Ex Libris' Alma. She
served as editor of the ALCTS Newsletter Online and Library Resources and
Technical Services. She's the co-author of Virtual Technical Services: A
Handbook and has published several other books.

*What Is an e-Forum?*

A Core e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of
interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The
e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email
address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate
with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two
to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.

For information about upcoming e-forums, please visit
http://www.ala.org/core/e-forums

*How to Register*

You must register your email address to subscribe to or access an
electronic discussion list on ALA's Mailing List Service. Once you have
registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you
choose to leave the list. Find instructions for subscribing and
unsubscribing online. (
