About the opportunity

Northeastern University Library is seeking an accomplished and inventive librarian who enjoys working closely with publishers to negotiate licenses and obtain the best possible outcome for the University community in the process.  With campuses in 3 countries, we are recruiting an innovative license negotiator to ensure our entire community has access to the same robust suite of electronic resources, regardless of their location.



Under the direction of the Department Head, the Global Network Support Librarian will be responsible for supporting the licensing and renewal of electronic resources to support the research, teaching, and learning at all Northeastern sites around the world.  They will be responsible for outreach to content providers to update them on changes in the Global Network and to negotiate access for all authorized Northeastern users.  They will be responsible for updating Library license and purchase tracking systems to document negotiated terms and for reporting out fiscal impact of the addition of new sites.  They will serve on the licensing team within Resource & Discovery Services, helping to negotiate new licenses and advising internal and external users on the appropriate use of library resources under the terms of the negotiated licenses. As a professional in the department, they will assist with other tasks related to the management of electronic resources, including renewals, discovery, and support for license compliance.



Specific Responsibilities

  *   Responsible for managing license review, negotiation, tracking and communications for the various contracts needed by the University Library and representing the interest of all campuses.  Serves as a liaison between the initiating party and the Office of General Counsel to identify the terms to be negotiated in the best interest of the University & the Library.  Participates on RADS license team and contributes to team’s projects.
  *   On a continuous basis, reviews existing licenses for impact of new Global Network sites or increases in fte, along with other criteria to determine if outreach is needed.  Communicates changes to the relevant providers and, if necessary, negotiates new terms and/or pricing based on the new configuration.
  *   Contributes to the renewal workflow for existing resources, trains on and serves as back up for library system (e.g. the proxy server, the library website, LibGuides, etc.) and participates in MARC record loads and other discovery-related tasks.
  *   Serves as a representative of the University Libraries to regional and national organizations and to relevant cooperative and consortial programs.

Qualifications:

•Graduate degree from an ALA-accredited Library Science program

•At least 5 years demonstrated successful experience in license negotiation, vendor/publisher relations and electronic resource management in academic or research libraries

•Demonstrated knowledge of established and emerging national and international standards relating to resource licensing, copyright, and electronic resource management.  Some experience with cooperative programs and consortial initiatives desirable

•Experience with library management software for electronic resource and license management.  Experience with Ex Libris Alma software preferred.

•Knowledge of trends and issues in academic libraries, scholarly communications, higher education, publishing, preservation, and emerging technologies

•Excellent planning, analytical, interpersonal, communication, project management and organizational skills

•Ability to work internally and externally with a wide variety of individuals at all levels, a strong service orientation, and a demonstrated commitment to staff development and diversity in the workplace



About the Resource & Discovery Services Department

In support of the research, teaching, and learning needs of the Northeastern University global community, the Resource and Discovery Services department leverages experience and expertise to efficiently and mindfully acquire, organize, manage, and make discoverable scholarly resources for the University community.  We are responsible for the acquisition, access, metadata, and management of library materials in physical formats for the Boston campus and electronic formats for all Northeastern University campuses.

This position is based in Boston and is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Specific arrangements can be negotiated at the time of hire.  Compensation:  $63,940 - $99,110
