Every organization and institution is faced with the challenge of
thoughtfully planning for the future. This roundtable discussion will help
you answer questions such as What is the five year plan? What data and
forecasts are needed to properly formulate the road map for your
organization? Is there a proven template? Or is there a secret formula or
special approach that the best leaders have already mastered? If every
organization needs a five year plan, why isn’t the process easier, more
effective, and less time-consuming? This stimulating discussion hosted by
industry leaders can better position you to develop your strategic plan and
move your organization forward confidently.

Manuscript Exchange Common Approach (MECA) Update

Our next Open Teleconference will provide an update from NISO's Manuscript
Exchange Common Approach (MECA) Standing Committee, which works to support
and explore future requirements for the NISO RP-30-2020, Manuscript
Exchange Common Approach (MECA) Recommended Practice.

The MECA Recommended Practice provides a common means to easily transfer
manuscripts between systems, such as those in use at publishers and
preprint servers. Previously, in workflow processes such as manuscript
rejection or alternate recommendation for article submission, there was no
straightforward way for a manuscript to move programmatically from one
system to another. Use of MECA obviates frustration for authors and
reviewers who complain of wasted time and delays in enabling access to new
research. The MECA open protocol supports improved publishing operations
and stakeholder communication.

Our working group co-chairs will join NISO staff to discuss the need for
MECA, how it works, and what’s happening now in the regular meetings of the
Standing Committee.

Text and Data Mining

Thursdays, 11:00 am–12:30 pm ET (US/Canada)

October 12–December 7, 2023

This virtual training series will equip students with the essential skills
and knowledge required to undertake text and data mining tasks. The
comprehensive course will introduce participants to key concepts and tools
of text and data mining, including data types, data structures, data
pre-processing, text processing, data mining techniques, text mining
techniques, and advanced topics in both data and text mining. Each session
will include a Python component, discussing the importance of Python and
its libraries in handling various aspects of text and data mining.

Event Sessions

The series consists of eight weekly segments, each lasting 90 minutes.
Specific dates are October 12, 19, and 26; November 2, 9,16, and 30; and
December 7.

Training Facilitator: William Mattingly, Postdoctoral Fellow, Smithsonian
Institution’s Data Science Lab
