Core webinar: Mind the (Training) Gap: Assessing Metadata Competencies
During a Multi-System Migration

Date: Wednesday, July 19, 2023

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description:

Over the past three decades, the emergence of digital repositories has
required the skill sets of technical service professionals to adapt and
evolve. Cataloging practice has enlarged from workflows focused on
bibliographic description to metadata creation for the long-term
preservation of digital assets. This presentation discusses a
multi-department collaborative project to reprocess digitized university
art exhibition catalogs in an academic library at an R1 research
university. It examines the challenges to legacy metadata remediation, the
implications of a lack of training with migrations, and how to manage the
expectations of internal repository stakeholders. Furthermore, it
prioritizes the importance of organization-wide investment in repository
management, and positions a culture of continuous assessment as a
prerequisite for fulfilling the library’s mission. Consequently, a
library’s impact can be amplified, and its staff can be empowered to
meaningfully contribute to its advancement.

Learning outcomes:

   -

Goals: “Exhibiting Metadata Competencies” discusses how skill sets can
be assessed through a collection remediation project. The lifecycle
management of digital files necessitates employing a staff with diverse
skill sets. This work is crucial for collection discovery and information
preservation. The goal is to demonstrate ways that descriptive remediation
can be leveraged as an opportunity to assess staff skills, identify
knowledge gaps, prioritize training, and guide hiring.
   -

Objectives: Attendees will be familiarized with digital preservation
measures and benchmark tools. Attendees will be able to develop a framework
for assessing skills, competencies, and knowledge gaps. Attendees will
understand practical methods for generating a culture of learning in an
   academic library technical services setting.

Who should attend?

Librarians, archivists, digital curators, metadata creators, and others
working with digital repositories, migrations, metadata remediation, and
collection assessment.

Presenters:

Dana Reijerkerk is the Knowledge Management and Digital Assets Librarian at
Stony Brook University.

Kristen J. Nyitray is Director, Special Collections and University
Archives, and University Archivist at Stony Brook University.
