[Eril-l] [External] Re: Taylor & Francis blocking IP addresses due to excessive use

We are aware of a technical issue occurring for some customers using browser extensions (such as Zotero) to download content from Taylor & Francis Online, and we are investigating this as a priority.

If you receive an excessive connection message and are temporarily blocked from Taylor & Francis Online, we recommend you wait a short while, clear your cache, disable your browser extension (for example, Zotero or Google Scholar), and then try to connect again using a different IP address, or via the proxy server.

We will continue to share any update on this issue. For any queries please contact support at tandfonline.com<mailto:support at tandfonline.com>.

Linette,

I think this has been a known issue with Zotero for a long time (also EndNote).

Another thing to check if you use EZproxy is have yiu wrapped the stanza with cookie options?

Option DomainCookieOnly
#stanza
Option Cookie

You should do this for all your Atypon hosted services, see
https://www.atypon.com/how-we-can-help/client-directory/<https://www.atypon.com/how-we-can-help/client-directory/>

Subject: Re: [Eril-l] [External] Re: Taylor & Francis blocking IP addresses due to excessive use

I had a researcher write last week that he experienced an excessive downloading block for AIP Publishing journals. He says before he got the block message he did get a warning on the top of his browser that Zotero was trying to use EZProxy…which apparently resulted in being caught in a loop that caused what looked like suspicious activity to AIP. He disabled a specific function in Zotero.

Did Zotero make some changes recently that is causing this behavior with various publishers and perhaps it is hitting T&F particularly hard? We don’t subscribe to many T&F journals to see this happening here.

All these emails made me re-read and question the AIP/Zotero-related block from last week. We rarely get excessive downloading emails but when we do they are almost always from IEEE and ACM.

Looking forward to meeting those of you attending ER&L.

Regards,

Linette

Although I have not heard of any issues with Zotero and T&F, we did have an issue last year with the Zotero config messing with our access to Swank films.

We experienced this last week as well at Acadia in Eastern Canada, not sure why.

Hello,

Same here. Only two cases so far, and we don’t know the browser, but they both seemed connected to Zotero and a malformed proxy setting. Glad to hear we aren’t alone if not glad to hear its happening.

Cheers,

Lisa

Hello Kenyon -

Yes, we've experienced the same thing. We've had a number of reports of on-campus IP addresses being blocked. We're still trying to figure out what the cause was/is.

I'm happy to know we're not alone!

External Email: Use caution with links and attachments.

Hello,

We received a few reports last week from Taylor & Francis that they had temporarily blocked one of our IP addresses because of excessive connection to Taylor & Francis Online (tandfonline.com<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/tandfonline.com__;!!IaT_gp1N!wSm7aYZLkckv-8S1C-SYwjntc5qMzp8ODu3z8wutJm7cSZGTO_AYW6G5VUdGKWibs7S8xyLzjwiA4eHfEuc$>). The activity occurs over a period of one or two minutes and involves dozens of connections to only 1 or 2 pages. The block seems to occur after 100 total connection attempts.

Our IT group investigated and suggested the activity could be due to a buggy browser. We've contacted a few users and they mentioned they were using Chrome and Zotero.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with Taylor & Francis Online or with Chrome or Zotero? If yes, do you have any suggestions on what we can do or should investigate?

Thank you,

Kenyon Stuart
