Core webinar: Communications Planning for Deselection Projects

Date: Wednesday, June 1, 2022

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: While deselection is a basic aspect of collection development,
it has become a controversial practice. Library patrons imagine books being
tossed into dumpsters with abandon. Constant budget cuts and a shift
towards increased access to electronic resources creates a rift on two
fronts. First, between selectors and administrators and second, between
teaching faculty and library administrators. The identity of the library as
a keystone of the "research institution" and the value of print books in
the digital age are at stake. Successful communication requires strong
collaboration and frequent contact between multiple departments within
libraries. This webinar will introduce an approach that will keep all
stakeholders informed for successfully ongoing deselection projects.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this webinar, participants will:

1. learn how one large university research library is utilizing multiple
channels and strategies to communicate both within and beyond the library
organization;

2. understand how to take practical steps to create their own communication
plan. This includes how to identify target audiences, customize
communication, and develop timelines; and

3. be able to identify potential difficulties ahead of time based on the
experiences of the presenters.

Who should attend?

Library managers will benefit most from the development of strategies for
communicating deselection plans. Liaison librarians, cataloging librarians,
collections departments, and library administrators will also benefit as
key stakeholders.

Presenters:

Betsaida Reyes is an Associate Librarian and the Head of Humanities and
Social Sciences at Penn State University Libraries. She recently completed
the ARL’s Leadership and Career Development Program. Her research interests
include collection development and information literacy. She is very active
in the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials
(SALALM) where she serves as a Member-at-Large of the Executive Board and a
member of the Communication’s Committee.

John Meier is a tenured Librarian and the Head of STEM for Engagement and
Outreach at the Penn State University Libraries. He has conducted research
and published on strategic decision making in libraries, science librarian
jobs, and data management services. He is a past Chair of the Science and
Technology Section of ACRL and initiated our Equity, Diversity, and
Inclusion Task Force.
