Core Classroom Event: Fundamentals of Hiring

Dates: August 15 – August 26, 2022

Format: 2-week virtual workshop that consists of weekly live virtual group
discussions. Students should complete the assigned readings and the media
prior to the live chat session. Students should also come prepared with
questions, both about the content and about any workplace challenges they
may have encountered, to help drive the discussion. The goal of this course
is to help YOU, so attending these sessions ready to bring up what you need
is important!

Core Classroom Class Schedule/Outline:

Week 1: Tuesday, August 16          11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Preparing to Hire:  Understand the steps necessary to create the groundwork
for effective hiring.

Week 2: Tuesday, August 23          11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The Hiring Process: Understand the basics of how to hire employees
effectively, including best practices for avoiding bias.

At the end of this classroom, attendees will be able to:

    Identify the key steps to effective hiring

    Understand the potential impacts of bias on the hiring process

    Learn how to advocate for fair and effective hiring practices

Format:

Students have 24/7 access to the class site for the duration of the class,
and aside from assignment deadlines, the work can be completed at their own
pace.  Presenters will have office hours to provide guidance and feedback
as students work their way through the material.  The following list of
live virtual discussion sessions, moderated by the presenters are the only
live class events. All registrants must be able to attend the live zoom
sessions and complete the assignments to receive the certificate of
completion.

Presenter:

Julia Davis is an experienced information science professional with a
strong passion for employee-focused leadership practices, accessibility,
and procedural standardization. Her experience includes time spent in both
academic and public libraries, as well as the legal, wellness, and
insurance industries. She currently serves as the Information Systems
Manager for Smith, Hulsey, and Busey, a full-service business law firm in
Jacksonville FL.

Julia holds a Master of Library and Information Science from Valdosta State
University, a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from
Jacksonville University, and is a current PhD candidate studying leadership
at Anderson University. She has published several peer-reviewed articles in
professional library journals and developed, as well as regularly
instructs, the Fundamentals of Management course for the American Library
Association’s Core Division. Originally from New England, Julia relocated
to sunny Florida in 2017. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with
her husband and stepson exploring the parks and local small businesses in
their neighborhood.
