Primary Research Group Inc. has published the Survey of US Higher Education Faculty 2023, Use of Streamed Video, ISBN 979-8-88517-109-0

This study looks closely at how 725 randomly chosen US higher education faculty are using streamed video, predominantly from the academic library. It helps its readers to answer questions such as: which faculty are using streamed video in the classroom? For research purposes? And to what extent? How satisfied are they with the current offerings and how easy is it for them to access collections and integrate them into their classes or research? In response to an open ended question, survey participant discuss what they expect and need from library streamed video services.

Data in the report is broken out by 12 personal and institutional variables including size, type or Carnegie class, tuition level and public/private status of the participant’s affiliated institutions, as well as personal characteristics such as academic field, tenure status, academic title, gender, income and other variables.

The 85-page study also looks at how use of streamed video collections changed as a result of the pandemic and asks survey participants to compare their current rate of usage both to pre-pandemic use and use during the height of the pandemic. Study participants also reveal if they would like to see higher library spending on streamed video, assuming that expenditures on other library resources may diminish or be restrained as a result.

Just a few of this unique report’s many findings are that:

• 35.59% of faculty surveyed have ever used streamed video from the academic library for one of their classes.

• Faculty in architecture and fine and visual arts were the most likely to have used streamed video from library collections for research purposes.

• Faculty at the lowest end of the academic pay scale were far more dissatisfied with academic library streamed video offerings than were faculty at higher pay grades.
