Core e-Forum: Giving the One-shot Your Best Shot: Making the Most of
One-shot Instruction

May 17-18, 2022

Moderated by Jennifer Batson, Kelly Williams, Michelle Shea, and Margaret
Dawson

Please join us for an e-forum discussion. It’s free and open to everyone!

Registration information is at the end of the message.

Each day, discussion begins and ends at:

Pacific: 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Mountain: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Central: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Eastern: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

In spite of the increasing complexity of the information landscape and the
importance of learning how to navigate it effectively, one-shot sessions
continue to be the primary format for teaching information literacy
classes. Librarians must consider how to integrate faculty expectations and
the expansive core concepts of the Framework for Information Literacy into
a single, limited time period. It can feel like a struggle to create
engaging and effective lessons. In spite of the difficulties, librarians
have found innovative ways to address the one-shot’s constraints. In this
e-forum, participants will discuss options and share effective and
inventive ways to maximize the effect of the infamous one-shot.

Hosts

Jennifer Batson has been teaching information literacy classes for six
years. In addition to her MLS from Texas Woman’s University, she has a BS
in Education and an MA in Humanities. Professional development classes in
areas such as active learning, backward design, and the Information
Literacy Framework inform her search for new and better ways to engage
students with information literacy.

Kelly Williams has a Master of Science in Educational Psychology from Texas
A&M University-Central Texas and a Master of Science in Library Science
from the University of North Texas. She’s spent most of her library career
working in the technical services departments of academic libraries but
recently made a change to reference and instruction. She is currently a
Reference and Instruction librarian at Texas A&M University-Central Texas.

Michelle Shea, MLS, M.Ed., is an Education Librarian at Texas A&M
University-Central Texas. She creates presentations and tutorials for
course integration, collaborates with faculty on committees, and promotes
student-centered services. Her passion is instruction, curriculum planning,
and campus outreach.

Margaret Dawson has spent 21 years working in academic and joint-use
libraries. She has a Master of Arts in English and a Master of Library
Science from Texas Woman’s University. From 2014 to 2021, she worked at
Texas A&M University-Central Texas in Killeen, Texas as an Outreach and
Instruction Librarian, and has developed programs for university students,
their children, and the general public. She has presented and published on
the topics of instruction and outreach.

What Is an e-Forum?

A Core e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of
interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The
e-forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email
address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate
with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two
to three days. Registration is necessary to participate, but it's free.

How to Register

The Core e-Forum list is using the discussion list platform called Groups.io
.

You must register your email address to subscribe to or access an
electronic discussion list on ALA's Mailing List Service. Once you have
registered for one e-forum, you do not need to register again, unless you
