Primary Research Group Inc. has published the Survey of Academic Library
Plans for the Print Materials Collection, 2022 Edition ISBN
979-8-88517-001-7

This report gives detailed data and commentary from 33 academic libraries
about their plans for their print materials, with specific data on books,
journals, newspapers and magazines, print photographs, maps and other
image-oriented materials, and other print materials. It also gives highly
detailed data on the percentage of course reserves materials in print
formats; most data sets are for three years, the 2019-20, 2020-21 and
2021-22 academic years (the third year is estimate), enabling the report’s
readers to assess the impact of the ongoing pandemic on plans for various
print materials.

In addition to data, the 78-page study also presents commentary on plans
for collection development in each of the major materials areas, with
specific commentary for journals, books, newspapers and magazines and
photographs, maps and other image-oriented materials.

Data in the report is broken out by size and type of college or university,
and by tuition level and for public and private colleges.

Just a few of the report’s many findings are that:

• The libraries in the sample modestly reduced the size of their book
collections by about 1% during the pandemic.

• In 2020-21 spending on print books by the libraries in the sample dropped
by 16%.

• For the 2021-2022 academic year, the libraries in the sample plan to
reduce spending on print versions of scholarly journals by 5%.

• Respondents from private colleges were much more likely than those from
public colleges to want to phase out print subscriptions of journals.

• For community colleges 100% of course reserve materials are paper
formats, a much higher percentage than for other types of college in the
sample.
