Core webinar: Overview of XML Metadata Quality Assessment Tools

Date: Wednesday, May 12, 2021

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

Description: This presentation will provide an overview of the capabilities
and drawbacks of several tools for XML metadata quality assessment,
including XML Schema Definitions (XSD), Schematron, and OpenRefine. With an
emphasis on how these tools can work together to create a more complete
quality control process, the presentation will hopefully give attendees
some ideas for how to improve their own QA/QC processes at their
institutions and reduce time spent manually reviewing large batches of XML
records. An example workflow from the Michigan State University Libraries
Digital Repository will also be presented, including links to Schematron
documents currently in use.

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the webinar attendees will:

   -

have an understanding of measures of metadata quality and be able to
instruct others in quality control issues
   -

be familiar with several available tools for assessing metadata and able
to make informed decisions on those tools’ best application for a given
   situation
   -

feel empowered to improve their own metadata assessment workflows.

Who should attend?

Metadata librarians and others who work with XML metadata, digital
repository specialists, and those who supervise metadata creation and
maintenance

Presenter:

Lisa Lorenzo is a metadata librarian at Michigan State University Libraries
working primarily with the library’s digital repository metadata. She is a
member of the development team working to improve and expand the MSUL
digital repository and is responsible for transforming metadata from
various sources and formats into standards-compliant MODS and Dublin Core
to facilitate searching within the repository and metadata reuse in other
systems, such as the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA).
