There is very little you can do about original content from Netflix, Amazon, and other commercial streaming providers. For feature films and documentaries, however, there are several options: Films on Demand, Swank, Docuseek2, and Kanopy all have large selections available in various models. In some cases you can also purchase or subscribe directly from the producer/distributor, e.g. Media Education Foundation. You may also be able to purchase a digital site license and host that on a campus server or at Avon or Films on Demand.

In general, for all questions related to films and streaming media in libraries, I recommend the VideoLib listserv that is dedicated to this topic.

Subject: [Eril-l] Streaming Services - original content

Hi Everyone,

We have one streaming video subscription (Academic Video Online). This subscription has good material, but we are asked more and more often about feature films and documentaries that are not offered on AVON. Since COVID, we've had a lot of questions about original content from Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, and documentaries/films that the library pre-COVID had available for the classrooms. Has anyone figured out a workaround beyond relying upon students to have accounts to these services? Some of our students have issues with internet access in the first place, much less access to individual streaming service subscriptions.

Thanks!

Mary Atwell
