[Eril-l] [EXT]: Problems searching Proquest Ebook Central today

Hi Cathy,

I reported a problem with searching in ProQuest Ebook Central last week before the maintenance. The support person I contacted could replicate the issue with our account but did not experience the same problem with their account. They forwarded it to their engineers.

Here's what I reported: "The search function appears to be down. All searches lead to 0 results. I can access a book directly from the URL, such as "https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/mcphs/detail.action?docID=5683741." If I click on the search box and enter any of the words in the title, I get 0 results. If I click on the "Browse Subjects" link, I get the message "Subjects are currently not available."

I used Firefox 72.0.2 (64-bit) and Chrome Versions 79.0.3945.130 (Official Build) (64-bit) and Version 80.0.3987.87 (Official Build) (64-bit) on a Windows 10 computer. Clearing my browser's cookies / history did not fix the issue. A colleague had the same experience on her computer."

Since we are in the same consortium and began using ProQuest Ebook Central through the consortium, maybe there is something peculiar about how our consortium's instances were set up?

Thanks,

Erin

Subject: Re: [Eril-l] Investigated but didn't opt for OpenAthens?

Dear Colleagues,

Many thanks to those who wrote to me directly with their own experiences. To share with the list, these are some of the reasons institutions did not go with OpenAthens, as cited in those responses:
1.      EZproxy is widely used and much cheaper;
2.      Combination of EZproxy and campus SSO provides much of the same functionality, minus more granular user data;
3.      Feedback from library faculty that it would add another hurdle for users surmount, particularly with a login up front;
4.      Legal contract for OpenAthens indicated servers were outside of the US and legal disputes would be handled in the UK;
5.      Concerns over patron privacy;
6. Loss of access for walk-in users.
If I have misunderstood any of the points made in these responses, I beg forgiveness from those colleagues.

Best,

I'm interested if there are any libraries out there who investigated OpenAthens but opted to not implement it. Other than for cost, why did you decide to forego it? Thank you for any information you can provide.
