I am the CEO and Co-founder of the library technology company Third Iron. In line with our mission of improving access to full text resources, I am writing to encourage everyone to take advantage of the current PubMed feedback period to advise the National Library of Medicine to improve access to library full text resources from PubMed. As I am sure many can relate, most users of PubMed simply go directly to PubMed rather than starting from their library portal. As a result, most users are usually unaware of the Outside Linking Tool functionality that could connect them from PubMed search results to library provided full text.

The good news is the NLM is currently soliciting feedback to further improve the new PubMed interface. Simply go to the new PubMed interface and click on the green Feedback icon in the lower right, or going directly to the form:
https://support.nlm.nih.gov/support/create-case/?category=plabs&a=pubmed&from=https%3A%2F%2Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2F&p=home&s=CE89146CBFD529F1_0143SID <https://support.nlm.nih.gov/support/create-case/?category=plabs&a=pubmed&from=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/&p=home&s=CE89146CBFD529F1_0143SID>

Once there, please recommend PubMed be updated so it is easier for users to affiliate with their organization to take advantage of library-provided full text resources. This could be accomplished, for example, by making organization affiliation an obvious part of the initial NCBI account set up process. Or by creating a persistent button in the PubMed interface reminding users to affiliate.

With simple changes to the PubMed interface, NLM can greatly benefit users by connecting more of them to valuable full text resources and keep libraries at the center of the research process.

Thank you!
