[Eril-l] Kanopy

Hello:
A reply from my colleague Joshua Keyes, the point person for Kanopy…

We have recently made significant changes to our Kanopy PDA at Claremont, creating a type of mediated PDA by having Kanopy turn off ~1/2 of our pool but keeping the records in discovery (so users will be directed to the request form for those titles). We also removed ~1/5 of our pool completely.

We don’t have experience with completely turning off the collection and the request form is turned on for us. User searches only retrieve titles we have access to, but there will be a separate set of results in a box below them stating “2,269 videos you can request for your library.” Since you have films still invoiced through them, it still should show the institutional affiliation.

Films not in our PDA pool turn up the request form. If you don’t enable that, it may replace that with a “This film is not available at your library” page instead. In our discussions with Kanopy, there did not appear to be a lot of flexibility with customizing the interface/what users actually see and we were not able to integrate our own request form (which was also our preference) in place of their request form.

If it is helpful at all, we have ~7500 FTE and do not have a film school or large media studies program. We receive about 5-6 requests per week and this includes having most of the popular collections behind the request form (e.g. Criterion, Kino Lorber, Samuel Goldwyn, etc..).

Subject: [Eril-l] Kanopy

Good afternoon,

We are contemplating cancelling our unmediated PDA model for Kanopy and have some questions for folks who have more experience with this issue. We’re a large university and are contemplating not to activate the request a video button on the Kanopy site, because we think we’ll be swamped with too many requests to handle. Instead, we would encourage our users to use the “Suggest a purchase” form on our website.

Once the unmediated PDA is in place, what will users actually see if they go to the Kanopy site?
Will they still see the whole list of titles or only the titles we have licensed?
What will be the message they get when they try to play a video?
Will it be different than what a regular person (ie. not someone on campus/vpn/signed in) would see, would it still show something that would indicate we work with Kanopy, but just not let them directly watch.
Is there a way that our users can see only the titles we have licensed?

Many thanks for any help you can provide.

Ingrid
