How Open Are You?
A discussion about the inclusion of Open Access resources in collection management
The volume of Open Access (OA) publications is growing, and incorporating OA resources into library collections is becoming increasingly important; but with over 11,000 journals in the Directory of Open Access Journals alone, how does one go about selecting, managing, and promoting journals relevant to a library's collection?
Jill Emery, Collection Development & Management Librarian at Portland State University, and Peter McCracken, Electronic Resources Librarian at Cornell University, are co-authors of a forthcoming publication with Graham Stone on streamlining OA workflows in electronic resources management. Jill and Peter will lead a discussion on the intricacies of incorporating OA resources into a library's collection development policy, managing OA resources, and promoting OA resources to library users.
This session promises to be informative with plenty of time for questions and answers. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to include OA in collection development policies, create selection criteria for OA materials, and promote OA resources. Attendees will also learn about access levels as they relate to OA resources.
Speakers:
Jill Emery is the Collection Development & Management Librarian at Portland State University Library and has over 20 years of academic library experience. She has held leadership positions in ALA ALCTS, ER&L, and NASIG. In 2015, she was appointed as the ALA-NISO representative to vote on NISO/ISO standards on behalf of the American Library Association. She also serves on the Project COUNTER Executive Committee. Jill serves as a member of The Charleston Advisor editorial board and is the columnist of "Heard on the Net," and is on the editorial board for Insight: the UKSG journal. In 2016, Jill became a co-editor of the open access journal Collaborative Librarianship.
Peter McCracken is Electronic Resources Librarian at Cornell University, a position he's held since June 2016. He was a reference librarian at East Carolina University and at the University of Washington before founding Serials Solutions in Seattle's Green Lake and Fremont neighborhoods, with his brothers and a high school friend, in 2000. In 2009 he founded ShipIndex.org, a database that helps people do research on ships. Peter was born and raised in Seattle, and is excited to be returning for a few days.
