ALCTS webinar: Standardizing Serials: KBART & Project Transfer (part 1)
Date: Wednesday, May 15, 2019
All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 AM Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 PM Central, and 2 PM Eastern time.
This webinar is the first part of a two part series “Standardizing
Serials”. Standardizing Serials is a two-part series that is meant for the
librarian who is new to serials work or wishes for a refresher on the many
standards that guide continuing resource licensing, discovery, and
acquisitions. Attendees will learn the basics of KBART, Project Transfer,
COUNTER, SUSHI, and SERU from experts in the field. Beyond just explaining
these standards, however, speakers Kristen Wilson, Athena Hoeppner and Kate
Hill will demonstrate their own uses of these standards within their
workflows. Through this, the series will help participants gain a better
understanding of how they can actually begin to implement standards use in
their own libraries.
Description: The webinar will introduce common standards used by continuing
resources librarians, with explanations and demonstrations by librarians
who are standards experts. This session will emphasize standards that
concern how librarians provide access to and keep track of electronic
resources and continuing resources: KBART, Project Transfer, and OpenURL.
Each standard will be described at a level for the non-expert, with a
discussion of their background, purpose, and an overview of their basic
components and function. Presenters will then demonstrate how these
standards can be used in practice through case studies of how they were
used in their own libraries and institutions.
Learning outcomes:
As a result of this program, participants will:
-
Be able to explain the uses of KBART, OpenURL and Project Transfer
within the world of continuing resources and electronic resources
-
Identify areas within their own library in which they could implement or
better use standards discussed.
-
Locate and use resources to learn more about these standards and
increase their own training and knowledge.
Who should attend?
People new to electronic resources and continuing resources ; People who
have worked in the continuing resources space but want a refresher on the
current state of standards.
Presenter:
Kristen Wilson began as a fellow at the North Carolina State Libraries, and
eventually became the Assistant Head of Acquisitions and Discovery,
overseeing the Continuing Resources Unit. In this position, she led many
multi-library projects, including acting as the project lead for the IMLS
funded knowledge base project the Global Open KnowledgeBase, and then
guided its transition to Folio. She currently is a project manager at
IndexBase, the company helping build Folio, where she works with libraries
to understand their needs and workflows and then translates those needs
into better software. She is also heavily involved in professional
organizations, including as the Vice-President/President Elect of NASIG.
