[Eril-l] FW: Kanopy vs. campus streaming?

This might be the time to get some pro-library, pro-Kanopy faculty in on the library's behalf, advocating for increased budget to cover this. Saying to administration that these films are essential for classroom teaching, it makes class so much easier, etc.

We are also seeing a lot more use of Kanopy at my institution, with overlap of our DVDs of classic films. And yet I can't blame faculty for not wanting to go through the hassle of getting a DVD player for class and checking out the DVD physically, and making sure it works with your classroom setup. It's easier to use one's customary laptop, presumably already rigged up to a projector or big monitor, and just stream the film from Kanopy. (except for when something goes wrong technically, of course).

What I worry about are the Great Courses video segments that are 30 minutes each. To pay the same for a trigger on those as for some 2 hour classic film would be really vexing. It hasn't happened yet but I watch those monthly invoices like a hawk.

Our use of Kanopy and streaming video has also gone up significantly, as faculty from all disciplines are using it for teaching purposes. We don't think the services are being misused, but it's definitely having am impact on our already lean budget. We haven't put any limits on use yet and will hold off as long as we can.

Best,

Jennifer

Subject: [Eril-l] Kanopy vs. campus streaming?

Hi,
I'm wondering if there are any libraries that have reached out to other departments on their campus about providing institutional streaming for students?

I ask this in relation to Kanopy since we have seen a dramatic increase in Kanopy usage. While we're happy that folks are using this resource, there's also the question of whether or not the library is the clear choice to be paying for this. I'm only aware of Swank and HBO Go that provide campus streaming.

My thinking is that the library could still license films for classroom use but maybe "entertainment" streaming could be paid for by student life or something similar.

Do others have thoughts about this?
Thank you,
Trisha
