[Eril-l] Kanopy DDA, Unmediated to Mediated, Any Regrets?

Hi All,

I haven't felt any regrets from our move to mediated access at all. Aside
from a brief surge of requests in the early weeks, we haven't had anything
happen to cause us regret for our decision.

I would absolutely echo all of Lynne's considerations, though. We also
moved to mediated in the middle of the semester and caused some mild
concern among our patrons. It was not fun, and I 100% recommend not
repeating that mistake. I would also echo the recommendation to prepare for
the time necessary to process Kanopy orders, especially when you initially
switch over. I didn't personally find the time necessary all that
bothersome, but I could see how it could be an issue for folks in different
circumstances (more pressing duties elsewhere, larger campus with more
requests, etc.).

One strategy that I've also found fairly useful in handling requests is to
become comfortable with the producers/distributors of commonly requested
films, and where they usually license their streaming content. If I see a
request come in for a film that *California Newsreel *or *PBS *handles,
for example, I know that there's a fairly good chance we may already have
it in one of our Alexander Street Press collections.

To reiterate my answer, though, no. We haven't felt any regret with this
move thus far. Just by ordering series in packages or directing
faculty/students to other platforms where we've already licensed the
content, we have managed to save nearly $4000 in unnecessary/inefficient
license purchases since mid-September. Our faculty, staff, and students
have been very understanding (spending lots of time explaining this change
to them helped!), and I feel very safe calling this change a success.
