ALCTS webinar: Improve Discoverability of Non-Roman Materials

Date: Wednesday, April 18, 2018

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11 am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1 pm Central, and 2 pm Eastern time.

This is the fifth session of a six-part series. View the other sessions in
this series
<http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/MARCtoBIBFRAME>.

This series of six webinars builds on the introductory series From MARC to
BIBFRAME: Linked Data on the Ground
<http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/MARCBIBFRAME>, which
was presented in fall 2016 and is now available free of charge. It
describes the continuing BIBFRAME initiatives taking place at the Library
of Congress as well as within the broader information community.

Description: In this session, attendees will learn how to provide subject
access to non English materials in the language of the script and how to
link the non English term to external sources via linked data techniques.
This will allow users to search the catalog by subject in their preferred
language. The presentation will address the following questions: Can MARC21
records be utilized to display non-English subject terms in the integrated
library system (ILS)? Can non-English terms be linked to FAST subject
terms? Can users search the library catalog by subject terms in their
preferred languages, e.g., Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, or French?

Learning outcome: Upon completion of this session, attendees will have
learned how to provide access to non-English materials in the language of
the script and link non-English terms to external sources with linked data.

Who should attend? Metadata, cataloging, area studies, and subject
librarians
