[Eril-l] Kanopy Streaming Videos - PDA program

Hi,

We have unmediated Kanopy PDA. Use has gone up by quite a bit here. It's a drain on the budget, but patrons love it (I know some of my liaison faculty are using it with great appreciation). If you make folks aware that Kanopy is a library deal, that's a good-will generator. On the other hand it's a bit annoying that films we have on DVD are being triggered for the year-long "rental" fee.

We're living in a YouTube/Netflix world. These days, people want to be able to stream instead of dealing with DVDs. It is something of a hassle to go to the library to check out the DVD, and make sure there's a DVD player in the classroom with regional compatibility. Or to put a DVD on reserve for students. So if you find yourself running out of funding, it's probably time to talk to somebody and say "hey, this is very popular and useful for faculty, but it's costing us money, can you give us more funds for this." You can point out that a lot of the films on Kanopy are educational / documentary / classic and useful for curriculum.

At least some of the films that we also have on DVD are used so much that I just have to swallow the price, and at least know we won't get charged again that year for "Rashomon". On a slightly positive note, we have been spending thousands of dollars on DVD requests every year, and there may (operative word "may") have been a decrease in DVD purchases if a desired film happened to be in Kanopy.

We also have Films on Demand, and it continues to have healthy usage, with a predictable price for the entire year's subscription.

Good Morning,

Since the beginning of the year our library has seen a significant increase in invoice totals for our subscription to Kanopy's PDA subscription. We are now being invoiced monthly, instead of quarterly (which it looks like were in 2017) and our totals for the monthly invoices are equaling the quarterly ones from last year. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed anything similar?

If so, has anyone made changes to their approaches in making these accessible? We currently have all subject categories available for our users to access - has anyone begun turning any of these off? If you have, how are you selecting which subjects are hidden and which you are leaving "on"?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your help. :)

-Marcia
