Making Holdings Work -  The ALCTS CRS Committee on Holdings is pleased to host two case study presentations on how library holdings have been managed with regards to consortial workflows and a discovery layer migration.

Ali Larsen, Serials Librarian from Siena College will present Consortia, EBooks, and Holdings-Oh My!

If the handling of eBooks on the local level can be an exercise in patience, what is it at the consortia level?  Controlled chaos is probably the most polite answer.  Siena College belongs to the ConnectNY consortia where eBooks are made accessible via purchase and subscription models.  Due to the lack of compatibility between the discovery layer and the eBook subscription vendor, the managing of records was time-consuming, riddled with problems, and felt like it was perpetually not up to date.  Working at the local level with our discovery layer vendor, solutions were suggested, discussed and implemented to remedy the problem.  Following more "tweaks", a solution to help relieve stress and free up time is now viable and will soon be offered to other schools in the consortia with similar circumstances.



Cynthia Kane, Professor and Director of Assessment and Terri Summey, Professor and Research/Instruction Librarian, both from Emporia State University Libraries and Archives, Emporia, Kansas discuss Holding Steady with Changes!  Using and Teaching a Discovery Service While Planning for a Transition.

How does a library that is preparing to transition from one integrated library system to a completely different ILS consider multiple patron needs while ensuring that catalog holdings are accurate and targeted to the patron's information need?  Does a Discovery Service interface help or hinder this change?  The Emporia State University Libraries and Archives will switch in 2018 from WorldCat WorldShare Management Services to the Sierra interface of Innovative Interfaces, Inc.   Realizing that patrons who are accustomed to a Google search experience and Amazon customer service expect accurate and timely results, in Fall 2017 our library implemented the EBSCO Discovery Service with our current WorldCat WMS to give patrons a collective searching experience.  In this presentation, library faculty will discuss the challenges and opportunities in teaching the representation of our local holdings, the holdings of smaller library collections, and the need for continuous patron feedback about interpretations of items' locations.
