The Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame is seeking a
motivated, outgoing, and dedicated individual to support our growing
digital collections needs. The Digital Collections Librarian will be
responsible for developing, managing, and providing guidance on digital
collections that are created by the library and other units around the
University.

Reporting to the Head of Digital Production, the preferred candidate will
work closely with the Libraries’ digital production, IT development, and
resources description units to consult on projects as well as to manage
content. The individual will ensure effective and efficient capture and
ingest of an increasing amount of digital content by applying professional
skills in project management and digital collection development.

As a member of the Library Faculty, the Digital Collections Librarian is
expected to pursue opportunities for engagement with the broader
professional community as well as to contribute to the growth and
development of the field through leadership and scholarship.

*Primary Responsibilities:*

The Digital Collections Librarian manages locally-created digital
materials, taking a lead role in the creation, maintenance and stewardship
of these digital collections for the libraries. Ensures that ongoing
digitization work and special projects move forward through team-based
collaborations.

Establishes priorities, manages projects, creates workflows and identifies
digital collection development opportunities as informed by emerging trends
and best practices in digital collection creation and management.

In support of the digitization and description of manuscripts and other
rare collections, works with curators in the Rare Books & Special
Collections and University Archives to:

   - Refine and develop digital collection standards and processes
   - Provide training and support to curators and other members of the
   units to assist them in creating records for enhanced presentation,
   discoverability, and interoperability of digitized special collections
   - For targeted faculty or special collections projects, coordinates
   and/or assists with loading batches of metadata and material for ingest
   into the institutional repository and other tools

Ingests digital collections contributions of the Hesburgh Libraries to
external partner projects such as HathiTrust, Internet Archive, APTrust,
and DPLA to strengthen the presence of Notre Dame’s specialized collections
within these collaborative projects.

Develops, implements, documents and communicates strategies for metadata
and authority control applied to a collection, potentially in collaboration
with Resource Acquisitions & Discovery (RAD) staff.

Leads and directs any mapping or reuse of existing metadata, from MARC
records, EAD Finding Aids, spreadsheets, or other sources, to repurpose
data programmatically, reducing the amount of manual work spent on metadata
creation and improving efficiencies for metadata creation carried out by
the unit or in collaboration with RAD staff.

Creates and maintains documentation on digital collections workflows,
metadata standards, and project procedures. Tracks and communicates
production throughput and productivity.

In coordination with the Libraries’ copyright support team, assesses
possible licensing or other rights concerns with archiving and sharing a
collection.

In conjunction with the Head of Digital Production, assist Notre Dame
faculty, staff, and students in curating meaningful digital collections and
scholarly content in Notre Dame’s institutional repository and other
potential tools.

In support of internally-created digital collections needs, 20% of this
individual’s time is devoted to acting as the Product Owner for DEC, the
Libraries’ locally-developed digital exhibits and collections tool, and
serves as a member of the oversight team for CurateND to:

   - Documents user needs and feedback through outreach and consultation
   with library and campus customers.
   - Shapes the product vision and requirements of digital tools to
   facilitate management and sharing of digital collections according to
   customer needs.  Helps prioritize the backlog of new features and
   enhancements.
   - In collaboration with technical leads, selects features for
   development by the Web & Software Engineering Unit and/or Digital Library
   Technologies Unit



*QUALIFICATIONS*

*Required Qualifications:*

ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or
equivalent advanced graduate degree is required. This individual should
possess an understanding of issues related to institutional repositories,
such as collection management and intellectual property issues.
Experience working with both large and small digital collections including
metadata, licensing, and quality control of materials; working knowledge of
current metadata standards such as Dublin Core, MARC, EAD, MODS, and METS.
Knowledge of appropriate digital library technologies and related accepted
best practices, digital curation, and web-based applications; evidence of
creative thinking about library services and technologies.
Demonstrated desire to connect people and information; excellent
organizational skills, and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments
and projects; ability to analyze, implement and adapt to evolving
technologies.
Outstanding oral and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an
intensely collaborative environment, including colleagues, administrators,
students, faculty, donors, and alumni.


*Preferred qualifications:*

Experience working with digital repository and digital preservation
systems, especially Fedora and Preservica.
Experience working as a product owner for a technology project, gathering
requirements and setting development priorities.
