Hi,

We are currently doing a Needs Assessment as part of an ILS (and potential discovery layer) selection project.

Did you encounter any resistance to losing the classic OPAC? We are facing the possibility of not having an OPAC and I know it will cause some unhappiness. One reason being, they want to be able to find a known book or film quickly, rather than getting a million results as if you were searching Google.

In looking at DU's installation of Alma/Primo, it seems like you can find a known item fairly quickly, but the annoyance is seeing all the other results, when you would have gotten that one known hit in the OPAC. It looks like DU scoped "Catalog" to be the items you would find in a traditional OAPC, but you can't easily do a title search from their general search. https://library.du.edu/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flibrary.du.edu%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cdwesterfield%40coloradocollege.edu%7Ccfa51101291d480a421d08d5f88bc576%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C1%7C0%7C636688201562314658&sdata=8wm%2FHNrhnIkwqdGi50zv950fV4Bqg8eVrYRFvnPqIX4%3D&reserved=0> One has to go to Advanced Search and fiddle around for an exact title search.

On our Millennium OPAC, you can hit the drop down menu from the library front page and specify title. See https://www.coloradocollege.edu/library/ Tiger catalog is stuck in the 1990s, but it's a predictable workhorse.

The issue will be convincing everybody that we need to move with the times and accommodate the patrons, especially students who have grown up with Google. (that is, if we end up going the Alma/Primo route. It looks to me like if you go with Sierra as an ILS, you can still have a Millennium-esque OPAC while opting for Encore or another discovery layer).

Thanks,

CAUTION: This email originated from outside Colorado College. As always, please be careful when opening links or attachments in any email.

We migrated from a Millennium/EDS set-up to Alma/Primo last year. We did set up a Primo scope that indexes our physical holdings (similar to the old OPAC if you use a browse). Honestly, getting rid of the "looking in two places to find your stuff" has been one of the most beneficial aspects of the migration for the vast majority of our patrons.

Hi, Courtney!

Ditto Tulane's comment. This is how we are set up at the University of Kansas http://lib.ku.edu<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flib.ku.edu&data=02%7C01%7Cdwesterfield%40coloradocollege.edu%7Cb740041a4d904cfe31d608d5f882aa48%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C1%7C0%7C636688162443273826&sdata=7M8jhLamjtNMer103RBKK5ZnApEXn0ecenOt8k%2FQuYc%3D&reserved=0> Copying our Voyager/Primo expert in case there's more to it.

Hi Courtney,

The Tulane library has a classic catalog interface with Voyager and use Primo for discovery - http://library.tulane.edu/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flibrary.tulane.edu%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cdwesterfield%40coloradocollege.edu%7Cb740041a4d904cfe31d608d5f882aa48%7Ccfc7b13c12964387b3085de08fd13c99%7C1%7C0%7C636688162443283838&sdata=SEalfjnpIc7pHBTLFzlpL9z7X1y0lLKKJQ8QJRd9BH8%3D&reserved=0>. With Alma, there is no classic catalog interface, so if you want one you will have to build it:)

Subject: [Eril-l] Primo and "classic catalog"?

Good evening,

At my library, we are in the early stages of preparing for a migration to Alma/Primo. Currently, we have Millennium and maintain both EDS and a "classic catalog" for discovery. Based on what I have heard/read, it sounds like the concept of a "classic catalog" is fairly incompatible with Primo.

In response to a question from my director, I'm wondering if any Primo libraries out there also maintain a traditional OPAC or "classic catalog"?

Thank you in advance for any information!

Sincerely,

Courtney
