ALCTS webinar: Securing Patron Privacy

Date: Wednesday, November 8, 2017

All webinars are one hour in length and begin at 11am Pacific, noon
Mountain, 1pm Central, and 2pm Eastern time.



Description: Article III of the ALA Code of Ethics reads "We protect each
library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to
information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired
or transmitted." But do we, when those materials are online? Can we? How?

Learning outcomes:

   -

   Understand where e-resource providers and infrastructure may compromise
   patron privacy
   -

   Understand how common web infrastructures and practices may compromise
   patron privacy.
   -

   Be prepared to implement privacy-protecting technology in library
   computers.
   -

   Be prepared to advocate for patron privacy with library administrators
   and e-resource providers.


Who should attend?  E-resource managers. Library administrators. Library
web managers.

Presenter:

Dorothea Salo is a Faculty Associate in the School of Library and
Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she
teaches about scholarly communication and publishing, metadata, and
library/archives technology. She has written and presented internationally
on patron privacy, copyright, institutional repositories, linked data, and
data curation. She holds an MA in Library and Information Studies and
another in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
