EDP Sciences announces the launch of Emergent Scientist: a new hands on peer-reviewed publication for science students

Paris, France 5th October 2017. EDP Sciences is pleased to announce the recent launch of Emergent Scientist, an innovative new open access journal that puts young scientists at its heart. The journal was born out of the 2016 International Physicists' Tournament (IPT), and is supported by the French Physics Society and the French Academy of Science.
Emergent Scientist offers young scientists at the beginning of their careers, the opportunity to discover peer-reviewed publishing and the publication process. The journal will especially serve those junior scientists who may not pursue a career in research, but become engineers, analysts, consultants or the like – as they will rarely get the opportunity to experience the peer review process once they have left their academic studies.

Daniel Suchet, Editor in Chief of Emergent Scientist said, “To understand how science works, and how societies can rely on it, it is crucial for students not only to practice the scientific approach in study and class projects, but also to experience the publication process itself.” Suchet continued: “We have created Emergent Scientist to offer a publishing experience to any student interested in trying the peer-review process. We believe that by writing, reading, and reviewing articles, students can understand better how scientific knowledge is actually produced in our societies.”

“Students work so hard to defend and criticize their work against fellow student scientists at the International Physicists' Tournament”, said Michel Spiro, President of the French Physical Society, “the committee felt they should be able to turn those reports into scientific publications rather than discard them as soon as the tournament was finished. The launch of Emergent Scientist has provided a solution to the exciting problems of the IPT, but also a new way to bring the whole publication process – reading, writing, and reviewing – straight to young scientists.”

Agnès Henri, Editorial Director of EDP Sciences, commented, “At EDP Sciences we are committed to supporting the dissemination and integration of scientific knowledge into society. We know that young scientists need support to understand the publishing process and through Emergent Scientist, we are delighted to help shape the future of research by providing an outlet for our brightest young scientific minds“.

As with any other academic journal, Emergent Scientist will receive manuscripts, ask referees to review them, supervise their revision by the authors, and publish them once they reach a satisfactory level of scientific quality. The journal does not expect authors to exhibit groundbreaking results, but to show exemplary scientific rigour and clarity in the way they tackle a problem and report their findings.

The first articles are available at https://emergent-scientist.edp-open.org <https://emergent-scientist.edp-open.org/> and while Emergent Scientist is currently physics oriented, the intention is for the scope to be broadened as soon as possible to include subjects such as mathematics and the life sciences.
