[Eril-l] JoVE subscription?

I was able to get usage statistics from JoVE by contacting Amy Nerboe (amy.nerboe at jove.com<mailto:amy.nerboe at jove.com>).

She is my contact for invoices.

Funny this should come up. I have two contacts in my records for JoVe. I emailed them a couple times in the last few months to ask about how I can get usage statistics. Never heard from either of them. I don't recall having problems with JoVE reps in the past.

Hi,

I have nothing nice to say about Jove's customer service. We (the OCUL consortium) have had a subscription with Jove since 2011ish. We got in when Jove were just starting out, with the early adopters promised lifetime locked in pricing. We had zero problems until Jove got a new Canadian rep who was extremely pushy, the OCUL office received multiple complaints about the rep's 'antagonistic' and 'aggressive' sales tactics. I spoke with the rep directly and he promised to scale back his sales techniques, and promised to adhere to accepted procedures when contacting institutions directly. This did not happen, if anything, he became more aggressive. Jove then informed the OCUL office that they would be reneging on their promise of locked in pricing, with some schools seeing up to a 200% increase for 2018. This contract breaking coupled with the complaints about the sales rep has led to the dissolution of the OCUL / Jove relationship, which I suspect is what the vendor wanted, so OCUL would no longer be a pricing barrier between Jove and the schools.

Prior to this year, we have had no problems with Jove other than their high sales rep turnover rate.

Thanks!
Jackie

Hi Karen,

We have also been looking at JoVE, with the same concerns about pricing. From my experience with their sales dept. they seem to be well staffed, so I'm not surprised to hear that their customer service is good. And the high cost of the actual JoVE journal and its subsets is the result of the same dynamic that's in play for any exorbitantly priced journal - the publisher's monopoly on its own articles and the inelastic demand of many institutions.

My main concern relates to their Science Education database, which is not intrinsically unique content. Indeed, my understanding is that it simply presents pretty standard experimental methods in video form. That's a great idea for a product and one that many schools can use, but there's no reason I can think of why JoVe should be the only option on the market in this category. I've been waiting for some innovative science publisher to create a competitive product to break the "monopoly" and undercut JoVE's pricing, but if there is one I'm not aware of it.

Regardless, the pricing I've seen for the Science Education database puts it out of the question for us, sadly. The annual cost per video seems to me just stratospheric.

Matthew

Has anyone tried out JoVE Journal or JoVE Science Education yet? What are your feelings on the customer service and content? I'm just not sure that I'll get enough "bang for my buck" with their pricing structure.
